If you have been following the news on herders' banditry, the name Sheik Ahmad Gumi sure rings a bell. Northern Nigeria has been losing control of parts of its region to bandits herdsmen for years now. When they are not abducting travellers for ransom or ransacking villages, they kidnap school children in the middle of the night. The bandits have reportedly killed scores of people and razed down several villages in various attacks.
And this is where the Kaduna-based Islamic cleric comes in.

His influence has been instrumental in securing the release of people kidnapped by the bandits, especially the Kagara schoolboys. His popularity also grew in recent times due to his effort at securing a peace deal for the bandits.
Sadly, in what will continue to amaze many Nigerians, Sheik Gumi has publicly been advocating for and defending the bandits terrorizing Nigerians. So far, he has made several shocking statements favouring the criminalities and atrocities meted by the bandits and statements aimed at dividing the country’s security agencies along religious lines.
