Killing of seven suya sellers in Imo, attempt to provoke ethnic clashes – Hausa community leader.

The deputy coordinator of the Hausa community in Imo State, Sulaiman Ibrahim Sulaiman, otherwise known as Garkwa Hausa (Shield of Hausa community), speaks to CHIDIEBUBE OKEOMA about the killing of seven suya sellers in the state by some gunmen

As coordinator of Hausa traders in Imo State, what can you say about the recent killing of seven suya sellers in two days by gunmen?

I am not the head of the Hausa community in Imo State; I am the second in command. The killings are highly regrettable but we can’t question God. Though it is very disturbing and provocative, we have submitted to the will of the Almighty God. We believe that God gives and He takes. We can only mourn as human beings, there is nothing we can do to bring the victims back to life.

Who informed you about the killings?

It was the Imo State Commissioner of Police who informed me and the Hausa community in Imo State about the killings of our brothers in Umuaka and Orlu. The killings were painful because the victims left very young families. They never bargained for it because they were selling suya when the gunmen struck and killed them.

Why do you think the gunmen would target suya sellers for killing?

Their killings were politically-motivated. It had nothing to with the Indigenous People of Biafra or the Eastern Security Network. Aggrieved politicians, who are not happy with the transformations going on in Imo State, masterminded the killings. They want to make Imo State ungovernable for distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, but by the grace of God, they will never succeed.

So, you think the killing of the seven suya sellers is part of the unrest currently rocking Imo State
?

Yes, it is part of the crisis happening in the state. As I said earlier, the gunmen killed our people to incite northerners to start attacking the Igbo living in the North. The killers are trying to make it look like it was IPOB that masterminded the killings, but it was not IPOB; the killings had a political undertone. The killers were sponsored by those who wish the Imo State Government bad.

An aide to the state governor has earlier said the killing of the suya sellers might be politically-motivated. Is your position based on what he said?

I totally agree with him. The killing of our brothers was politically-motivated. It was designed in such a way to encourage ethnic war but we have found out that it was not IPOB that killed them. Imo people are peace-loving people. Many of us were born here and our generations have lived in Imo State for over 150 years. How can we have problem with those who give us their daughters in marriage; those whose breast milk many of us suckled? Imo people don’t have any problem with the Hausa community in Imo State. The killings were politically-motivated.

Were the killings reported to the police and are any efforts being made to track down the killers and bring them to justice?

Yes, the killings were reported to the police. As I told you, it was the Imo State Commissioner of Police that informed me and the Hausa community here about the killings. And, of course, efforts are being made to make sure that their killers are arrested and brought to justice.

How are the families of the deceased dealing with their losses?

Their families are devastated because they never bargained for what happened. Moreover, the victims left behind very young families. The slain suya sellers were the breadwinners of their families, so, their killing is, indeed, a big blow to their families. As a community, we are telling their families that they are not alone in this moment of loss. We share their grief.

Are the fellow Hausa traders in Imo doing anything to support the families of the slain suya sellers?

Yes, we are doing what we can to support the grieving families. We are supporting them in the ways we can. In the spirit of ‘be your brother’s keeper,’ we are assisting them to overcome these difficult times.

Have the slain suya sellers been buried?

They have been buried. They were buried in line with the dictates of the Islamic region and doctrines.

Were they buried in Imo or taken back to the North?

They were buried here in Imo State. Their killings were not good but we have submitted to the will of the Almighty God.

Do you support the call for state police as a lasting solution to these incessant attacks?
Which state police? We are fine with this centralised police command. State police will be abused and it will divide Nigeria the more. If you establish state police now, every state will only be defending their indigenes, thereby creating more tribal and religious problems. We are fine with this centralised police formation.

Many are blaming the rising insecurity in the South-East on President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged marginalisation of the region. What is your view on this?

Which marginalisation? The Hausa are the most accommodating people in Nigeria. How many Igbo people were involved when Goodluck Jonathan was President and how many Hausa people were accommodated? How many Yoruba people were in charge when Obasanjo was President and how many Hausa people did you you see around?

When you thought Ikpeazu is the worst Governor in Nigeria, you will get the realize that Hope Uzodinma is the worst human that ever graced Earth.

Its very difficult to even believe he was created by God.

How he got to power remains a misery.

Hope, cant even run a beer parlor successfully, how much more, a whole state

If you had read the article, you would see how totally offpoint your comment is.

When you read the excerpts on the discussion with the woman who witnessed the killings in ebonyi, she claimed the killers spoke in pidgin language which is not a norm with the fulani herdsmen. It goes to show the killers wanted them to hear the discussions, then turn around in alledgely killing the hausas as reprisal attacks to cause an ideology of hate..

one strongly believes Fulani herdsmen allegedly killed the Hausas.. There are thousands of hausas doing occupations closer to easterners in the east than suya sellers. The target on suya sellers is because it can be done in the cover of the night without identification.
