Abuja (WorldStage Newsonline)-- Barely 24 hours after he was officially declared as winner of the Saturday presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria on Tuesday suspended Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho, Minister of Interior over a number of lapses in the discharge of his duty.

The president who many have accused of not been able to take decisive action against erring members of his cabinet, according to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ima Niboro, said the suspension was with immediate effect.

He said the suspension was a result of a number of lapses in his handling of the ministry.

He said Iheanacho had since been asked to hand over to the Minister of Labour, Mr. Emeka Wogu, who will, in addition to his present portfolio, oversee that ministry.

The three paragraph statement reads, “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has ordered the immediate suspension of Capt. Emmenuel Iheanacho as Minister of Interior and member of the Federal Executive Council.

“Capt. Iheanacho has been directed to hand over to the Minister of Labour, Mr. Emeka Wogu, who will, in addition to his present portofolio, oversee that ministry.

“Capt. Iheanacho’s suspension comes as a result of a number of lapses in the political leadership of the ministry traceable to his personal and official conduct. For now, his continued manning of the ministry is not in the interest of the nation.”

Nigerian categories stories so much. The president has done his job now and some one has just place his action as a decision from the legislative organ.
If the president doesnt act,we wil run out mouths and place blame and now that he has taken action we still dont give him credit?.
I thinck the president has just acted very smarth and correct just like other any inteligent leader should act.Hoever that will stimulate other ministers to perform to avoid being sacked.

President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the Minister of Interior, Emmanuel Iheanacho.

Mr Iheanacho has been directed to hand over to his counterpart in the Ministry of Labour, Emeka Wogu, who will, in addition to his present portfolio, oversee that ministry.

This development may be connected with the protests in some parts of the country after Mr Jonathan was announced winner of the presidential polls. It may also be seen as the beginning of an imminent shakeup of his cabinet.

The Imo State born minister, a retired Navy Captain, was appointed substantive Minister of Interior on April 6, 2010, when Mr.Jonathan, as Acting President, announced his new cabinet

A statement by the spokesman to the president, Ima Niboro, said that the suspension comes "as a result of a number of lapses in the political leadership of the ministry traceable to his personal and official conduct. For now, his continued manning of the ministry is not in the interest of the nation."

Nigeria is a very complex country to govern. Many interests are at stake.

I find it intruiging that he asked the minister to handover to a counterpart who hails from the SE.

Anything other than that would have set tongues wagging about ingratitude to the SE who voted massively for him in the elections.

We should give the man credit when i t is due to him!

I am sorry to say that sacking the Interior minister should not be the case, they need to come up with a comprehensive plan for reacting to situations like this, he has just sacrificed the minister (who was probably busy rigging for him anyway), more heads need to roll, the Inspector General of Police and the director of SSS should also be sent packing, they should have anticipated this, their successors should come up with plans on how to nip situations like this in the bud, sacking a minister and not putting in place a frame work and working towards actualising that frame work is just a publicity stunt.

The whole lot including presido - Square pegs forcing themselves in round holes

4 years will soon be over - Nigerians will see what they have elected

Exactamente. Hopefully this will follow course. Jonathan needed a scapegoat and he got it. Hopefully, it does indicate a shakeup in cabinet similar to what he did in the few weeks of being president following Yar'Adua's death (may his soul rest in peace), where he hired competent people--like the Financial Officer from Goldman Sachs.
