Muammar Gaddafi became the de facto leader of Libya on 1 September 1969 subsequent to driving a gathering of youthful Libyan military officials against King Idris I in a bloodless rebellion. After the ruler had escaped the country, the Libyan Progressive Order Council (RCC) headed by Gaddafi canceled the monarchy and the old constitution and set up the Libyan Middle Easterner Republic, with the saying “freedom, socialism and solidarity”.
