I would imagine the very first thing to do is to empty the chamber.

I once saw a MOPOL officer exchanging jokes with a construction worker on a site where I worked. As they were joking, the officer casually emptied his chamber, and picked up the bullet.

He did this all the while pointing his rifle upwards.
