The Nigerian army is charged with the responsibility of peacekeeping in African countries as they are one of the largest contributors to the United Nation on peacekeeping operations. Nigeria has provided military staff officers, police units, and policy advisors to more than 25 UN missions.

They were the military backbone of the United Mission in Liberia between 2003 and 2018 where they helped restore the security of lives and properties in Liberia. Recently, 144 Nigerian police officers were deployed to Somalia for peacekeeping. This is coming at the period when Nigeria herself battles internal crises such as insecurity, banditry, and so on.
