It is funny to see the way people throw away money.

When next you want to buy a car , go to any car stand and look for your choice.
Before paying,, ask them to follow you to customs office to verify the details of the car .

You cannot get all the N5.5m again, he may refund part of it.

Take the car, cut your loses and walk away

But the best place to report a security official is to senior management in his organization. No one takes kindly to having their firm's reputation ruined

In November 2020, I Paid my neighbor who has a car stand for a toyota highlander 2010. He said he can bring it for 4.5m and asked for 2m deposit to balance when the car comes. Long story short, I ended up paying 5.3m and he came up with several stories about processing custom duty and didn't bring the car (a different 2008 highlander) until January 16.

I traveled few days after and on my way back, I got stopped by customs officers. The duty on the car was shoddily forged. I parted with 220k after long hours of begging. I got to Abuja with a soldier that I paid 40k. In summary, the car has cost me 5.7m.

I returned the car when I got back and he said I'll pay 60k to cancel the registration and he'll sell the car . since February 3rd, he hasn't paid. Once he said some people deposited money and I asked for it. He sent 200k in March. He's been posting me week after week. Different stories.

What's the best way to recover my money? I'm tired of the stories.
He said he's retired SSS

Contact me on 08060319670, alternatively, if you are in Abuja, come to suite 42 Dansville plaza Gudu District Abuja.

Find out if he is still alive financially, just so that u know what you are dealing with. Get a reputable lawyer, you will have to pay well but you will get a large part of your money back.

Why did you return the car? Simply go to customs and perfect the duty.

I will suggest that you go to his car stand, get any car worth your money, then resell

Spoke to a lawyer. I'm just worried it might drag on and on again.

That is exactly what will likely happen and you'll end up spending more money

The Sir/MA should do a giveaway for all the hungry youths on NL since he/she have more money where the 5.5m came from.

You shouldn't have returned the car. You should have just done the duty and registration legally.
Getting your money back will be hard. Even if you involve a lawyer, they will keep adjourning the case. The judicial system in Nigeria is messed up. Almost every citizen has a dubious intent.

My Advice: Meet him one on one and find a way to resolve it. Take back the car and do the registration and duty legally......both of you can share the cost. Involving lawyer and police will make you spend more money and also waste your time!
Gbam. Seconded

The truth is that he may not be who he claims he is. You will only know this if the case starts as he may deny ever telling you that. Even though he is, it does not give him any right to scam you.

Have you ever gone to his stand to see the possibility of him having what you actually wanted? If no, you can try that first..

You would have just paid the customs fee and cut your losses short..

When it comes to reputation, test them with money.
You will be surprised...
Re: Help! How Do I Recover A Debt Of 5.5m? by 9icetoo(m): 6:16pm On May 02, 2021
1. You may wish to hire a debt collector(you will pay for his services and probably a percentage of the money you seek to recover. The debt recovery person may utilize a means that may worsen this already unpalatable situation.)
2. You may wish to go to court (you will pay lawyers, spend years in court by which time the money may have lost its value)
3. Involve police, efcc, dss etc. These are not debt recovery agencies. You will have to pay to mobilize them or you won't get the results you want. Eventually, you may end up in court. See 2 above.
4. Go and take back the car. The deal was too good to be true to begin with. How did you think it was possible to get a 2010 highlander for 4.5m in December 2020? It sounded too good to be true and that turned out to be the case. Preorder prices are usually not too far from what is obtainable at the car stands unless you are supremely lucky and patient.

You paid right about the normal price for a 2010 highlander at the car stand so you really didn't lose (I am just seeing the part that he supplied you a 2008 instead of 2010). In that case you are entitled to the difference. How you go about getting the difference back is between 1 and 3. You can also go the "street" way if you are really desperate for the money or want to pass a message.

As per the customs part, he may have underpaid the duty. In that case, you can request for a demand note from customs and pay the balance. That will sort you out on the custom ish forever.
Good luck.
