I don't think you need to poison beans for fowl to die after eating it. Anyone who's grandma kept fowl would have been told the beans will swell up inside the fowl and kill it!

People now preserve beans using sniper, probably to protect it from pests. That's why when you cook beans, you must wash out the water you used in parboiling it first. This may be the case here.

A s early as the 1990's when I was learning how to cook beans, I was advised to wash the beans thoroughly as it was likely preserved using pesticide. (In our house then, we even kept some beans preserved with pesticide once)

The reason that happens...the preservation..., is to protect them from weevils. If you don't preserve your beans well, them bean weevils will eat and eat and eat your beans. Sometimes we used to eat beans with weevils inside on occasion back then(a relaltive labelled them a good soruce of protein!)
