President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission (NSIWC) to review the salaries of civil servants as well as the number of federal agencies.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this at the National Policy Dialogue on Corruption and Cost of Governance in Nigeria organised by the Independent Corrupt Practice Commission (ICPC).

She said, “Mr President has directed that the salaries committee that I chair, work together with the Head of Service and other members of the committee to review the government payrolls in terms of stepping down on cost. The government will also review the number of government agencies in terms of their mandates, adding that the government will consider merging two agencies with the same mandate."

If these considerations are implemented, FG will save more money. The money can be used to fund pending projects which will improve the economy. On the other hand, there would be mass retrenchment when agencies are merged. This will add to the already high unemployment rate in the country and in turn increase the poverty index.
