Tommy Brown, Max Martin, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Andrew "Pop" Wansel were among the writers and producers who joined Grande on the album in October 2018.

In comparison to her previous releases, Grande started to exert more artistic influence over her music with this one, and she moved away from the conventional album release schedule. Thank You, Next is a hip hop-influenced pop, R&B, and trap album.

The album's title track was released as the album's lead single on November 3, 2018, with no prior notice. The song was a huge commercial hit, peaking at number one in 12 countries and setting a slew of records, including the record for the most Spotify plays in a single day by a female artist.

On January 18, 2019, the second single, "7 Rings," was released. The song was also a critical hit, reaching the top of the charts in 15 countries, including the United States, where it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

The third single, "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," was released on February 8, 2019, the same day as the album. In Ireland and the United Kingdom, the album debuted at the top of the charts.
