The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to suspend the planned electricity tariff hike.

The lawmakers decried the exploitation of Nigerians by electricity distribution companies.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Aniekan Umanah on Thursday during plenary.

According to the lawmaker, the hike is planned for 1 June, 2021.

Umanah lamented the lack of electricity despite the periodic increment in electricity tariffs.

“Despite those increases, Nigerians have not enjoyed significant improvement in power generation, instead they daily grapple with epileptic services from the DISCOs and unilateral exploitation in the name of estimated billing arising from non- metering of over 50% of consumers.”

He said Discos have increased electricity 5 times since 2015.

The lawmaker said the suspension of the planned tariff becomes imperative in the face of rising insecurity, unemployment, and the impact of COVID-19.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House, therefore, mandated the committees on Power, Poverty Alleviation and Labour, Employment and Productivity to ensure compliance.

There's no need to suspend it cause they will just wait for two months and still hike it.

My issue is, what is the standard they use in jacking up electricity price?

For the subsidy, make them kuku remove am. Let's kuku know that there's nothing the government does for its people.

We provide our own electricity, we make our own roads, we source for our water, we pay vigilantes for security.

I woke up with thoughts this morning. So after all these we've been through in this corntree, some of us will still miss heaven & enter hell? Haba. We've been through a lot in this hell called Nigeria. We do not want another hell. Fuel is about to hit N380, we're not even talking about the cost of food now self. And some idiots were busy burning INEC offices, thereby giving this Govt another reason to stay past 2023.

Hmmm. How many times will they hike price this year? What kind of hell is this?
Fuel prices to go up too then prices of commodities will follow suit. The average man will suffer, the looters will loot more and feed fat.
Time to start hanging corrupt people so we can all feel the heat.
