Illegal arrest and detention of innocent Nigerians by the Nigeria Police has been on the increase. This arrest are most times induced by the High and mighty in the country, while other times, it's a form of victimization of persons who refuse or cannot keep up with police extortion.

These detained persons are kept in police custody without food. Thus, their relatives or they themselves have to make provision for their feeding. Furthermore, apart from in cases of gunshot injuries, where the police gives minimal first aid, no attempt is made towards catering for the suspect's health. Clothing is a no no. This seems to be just a police thing as other arresting agencies try as much as possible to give a minimal comfort, ostensibly because while most victims cum suspects of the Police are the not so we'll to do while those of other agencies including EFCC and ICPC are influential persons.

Now, we hear a lot of persons blowing their trumpets of their Human Rights achievements. We also have an Agency - National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) dedicated to fighting for the rights of Nigerians. The question now is why hasn't any of these persons taken up the police on these issues?

It seems Human Rights activists are only concerned with things that would bring them more fame and wealth, rather than truly canvassing for respect for human rights.

I believe that if the Police is compelled to cater for feeding, health and clothing of their suspects, the number of arbitrary arrests would drop.

N/B: Magistrates are by law suppose to oversee the State of detention facilities within their domains. However, with the workload on the judiciary, it's a no brainer that such law cannot succeed.
