If you know any Nigerian University still having lectures on this course and Fortran please name them let's shame them or even sue them cheesy
You are confusing coding skills with computer science in general.
Anyone can learn the latest coding tech but very few are true computer scientists.

If the practicals are part of it, fine .If it is only paper reading....rubbish.

Actually, we'd be doing C++ when we resume for second semester 200L in my school. I'm gearing up for it already.

When I was taught this programming in uniben, I didn't understand noffing because of the lecturer taking it and they make it look abstract. God will never forgive those lecturer, they did it for you to come and BLOCK.

I don't agree with you however, there's a need for much hands on. Some professors still use Fortran77 for choosing computations that are heavily reliant on mathematical formulas.

Not only Nigerian Universities, universities outside Nigeria use Pascal too.

It was a language designed with beginners in mind.

Small languages are usually good for introducing learners to programming - you can cover the language within minutes to hours. That way, you can teach good programming practices without the overhead that comes with learning a bloated language. Another good one is Scheme(LISP).

Sylvanus Oliomogbe, the author, Funny thing is the Guy taught my Mother the same course in 1992 and also taught me in 2012 at Uniben. Same lecturer. Same notes word for word

More fool you bro

Fortran is still used for high level scientific computations

I was fast to understand MATLAB because I took my FORTRAN class serious. However, BASIC and FORTRAN should be learnt in secondary school. That is why I make BASIC compulosry to high school kids at my Technical Center.

Fortran is useless now...but I guess it's normal to give computer science students some lectures abt the course....it all basic programming....

Most of these course we're offered in 100/200 Level for just one semester...so it not a big deal

I guess we all code for different reasons. Most of my professors who are into structural modelling prefers Fortran77.

By the way, Python isn't geared for academic research. Thurs, the reason for coding in different languages so that you can use the appropriate one that works for what you want to do.

BASIC is dead. You may say oh it is really simple to learn, yes, but there are better languages now, i.e. JavaScript. It's soooo easy, it can run anywhere there is a browser. I did not attend any university, mainly because to me it's a waste of time and resources, but come on, bro, stick with the times. You can make a living right away with JS, if you know the right places, you can't make a living with BASIC. You might say that we have to learn the basics first, yes I agree, but you can do that and earn a living. There is not time to waste. Even PHP, it's Soo damn easy and profitable at the same time.

the problem with this academic research thing, is who will employ you? NOBODY! You see why many people come out of the university and go looking for jobs and end up getting employed in a field that has nothing to do with what they studied.

I thought I read somewhere that NUC replaced BASIC, Fortran, and Pascal with some other programming languages?

Maybe old school, but I'm of the opinion that virtually any general purpose programming language can be used to introduce students to programming. In fact, a language as simple as BASIC helps them focus more on problem solving/algorithm development and worry less about syntaxes. But it would have been much better if the introductory languages were taught at the secondary school level. That way, the university would have enough time to teach languages frequently used in production.
bro, that can be done with Python. In the US they don't teach such languages anymore, in fact the reach Python as an introduction.
