Please I need an answer to this

I have a friend who's currently in 200l but he wish to travel abroad but he's somehow confused that here in Nigeria he's in 200l if he travel abroad can he still continue his education at that same 200l or he have to start afresh.

nowhere:
If the practicals are part of it, fine .If it is only paper reading....rubbish.
university can not teach you programming, you learn that on your own. It's like learning Yoruba, Igbo or English, you have to practice to get proficient in it.

If you know any Nigerian University still having lectures on this course and Fortran please name them let's shame them or even sue them cheesy

Funny.
I did Fortran in 200 Level.
I'm now in 300 level, I'm doing Fortran, C++ and Matlab combined together.

It's an Agricultural and Environmental Engineering course.

University of Ibadan, I hail thee

While I'm not a computer scientist, but the op reeks of sheer ignorance. Older generation programming languages are not a waste in this modern age. For example, The US nuclear weapons force still uses a 1970s-era computer system and 8-inch floppy disk. Also, 3.5-inch floppy disks are still in use on airplanes to load avionics software. A dead clock is useful twice.

University lecturers that are still teaching cobol, basic or fortran
God will punish them
You people have luck.
You have smart phones now and can install any IDE and write any program you really wish to learn.
I was so surprised that I downloaded something and began writing some C++ programs on my phone, in my pocket.
When we were at school, there wasn't anything. Only one useless computer in the department and NO INTERNET to download anything.
They just taught us Fortran with mouth. No way to practice.
Now, see ALL THE WHOLE FORTRAN TRAINING video here, just because of internet availability.

Just learn whatever and pass.

Who is the friend? Can't he ask the question for himself or he's too stupid do so?
In that case, he'll go abroad and start everything again from 1st year.
Does the idiot even know the country he wants to travel to?

I think it'll good for you to know that the newer version of FORTRAN (Fortran 2003) is highly recommended for Computer Science students even in 2021. You think computer science is about learning the latest technologies? No, man. It's about giving students solid background in computing which will enable them learn with ease the technologies of their interest.

Let me pause here and refer you to this thread on quora: https://www.quora.com/Shouldnt-Fortran-be-the-first-language-that-undergraduate-CS-students-learn-in-college

Every programming language is structurally the same. The difference lies in what they can do and the level of abstraction that it can take. If you know Pascal and C very well, learning a truly object-oriented language like Java will be a walk in the park for you; you only need to learn to start thinking in Objects and Classes.

Pascal is still very relevant today and Pascal programmers are a rare gem. For instance, Skype was the best messaging platform on earth until Microsoft bought it for $8.5 billion. And yes, Skype was written in Pascal.

The people who laugh at Pascal do so from a point of ignorance.

Facts! My first University level introduction to programming was Pascal when Procedural Programming was THE thing. Sad to see how these young guns fling Pascal like its a useless language

that's not true, they don't, ok? It's all a ruse, U.S. nuclear weapons on a floppy? Hahahahahaha.

yes it's useless because no one is going to employ you, not even as a freelancer. How many apps today are built in Pascal. I don't know of any.

I don't agree with you however, there's a need for much hands on. Some professors still use Fortran77 for choosing computations that are heavily reliant on mathematical formulas.

But what I want to do does not require computation that relies on mathematical formulas or at least no computations at all, that's why I said God punish anybody that's wasting my time teaching me fortran that I will not even know.

Pascal programming language is a good introductory language to programming. It easy and can be used to teach all aspects of programming. Its better than BASIC language. By the way, there are modern variations of PASCAL like DELPHI.

Python is better, another one is PHP, JavaScript is another language that can be used, you see, the advantage is that, you can earn money even as a student. You don't have to wait to get a job after school, if you are a risky person, you might even decide to drop out and pursue the business full-time, and make big bucks, forget about the legacy languages. You should learn what is in high demand.
