With qualification for Columbia 2011 World Youth Championship already in the bag, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria and the Cubs of Cameroun have only the AYC 2011 crown to play for when they meet in Sunday’s Orange African Youth Championship (AYC) Final.

Nigeria and Cameroon both earned the right to contest Sunday’s final after victories against Mali and Egypt respectively in the Semi-Final. Nigeria defeated Mali 2-0 while Cameroon overcame the Young Pharaohs of Egypt 4-2 via penalty shoot-out.

Cameroon and  Nigeria have met on 5 occasions in the past with Cameroun winning 4 of those encounters: 1-0 in 1993 group stage, 2-1 in 1995 semis, 2-0 in 2007 group stage and 1-0 in the group stage of this year's competition. Nigeria's only defeat of Cameroun was a 2-1 win in 1999 semis.

Cameroun despite remaining unbeaten and boasting of the better defense between both sides having conceded only a goal, as against the 2 conceded by the Flying Eagles have scored only 3 goals while the Flying Eagles have scored 6 goals and boast the tournament's highest goal scorer in Uche Nwofor who has 3 goals.

This encounter is a repeat of the Group B match between both sides which was won by Cameroon 1-0, being the only defeat suffered by the Nigerians in this year's AYC. However, gaffer of the Flying Eagles, John Obuh is unperturbed by these past losses and is upbeat about his side’s chances. In his words, ''I have told the boys to be optimistic about our chances of winning the trophy because I strongly believe we will win on Sunday. Cameroon may have defeated us at the group stages but there is nothing that stops us from defeating them this time around''.

Motivation has come the way of the Flying Eagles from President Goodluck Jonathan who has commended the players for their fighting spirit so far and urged them to win the trophy for him as a special re-election celebration gift

2.45 pm. End of first half. I have to say that Nigeria missed a glorious chance in the 44 min when Daniel blasted his shot wide over the bar from the edge of the 18 yard box with a clear shot at goal. However one has to give it to the Camerounians whose defence is solid and well organised with the Nigerians so far unable to break them down. Nigeria could do with a little bit more creative play up front.
