Ideally, shopping online should only mean one thing - ease.
However, a number of Nigerians have not entirely embraced the culture of online shopping, and for totally valid reasons, such as shopping scandals or scams. A lot of us can relate to these experiences, or at least know someone who can. This lack of confidence in online vendors may be affecting the reception of online shopping, and crippling the Nigerian e-commerce ecosystem at large. Here are some tips that might help you shop smarter moving forward.

Be on the lookout for reviews:
Read through comments and reviews on the page. It is very likely that there have been complaints previously made in the comment section, especially in regards to customer service, response time, delayed delivery or none at all, and the quality of items delivered. You can also check how much engagement they have. Seeing a supposed high-selling brand with little or no feedback or comments could be a red flag to watch out for.

Make purchases only on secure websites:
A secure website is one where all data imputed like passwords and payment information are protected. Shopping on an insecure website means your information is at potential risk. To identify a secure website, look to the top left corner of your browser. At the beginning of the web address, you should see a padlock sign.

Get as much details as you want about the product:
The most common type of unpleasant shipping experience is ‘What I ordered vs what I got’, it is usually because most vendors posts stock images which are images gotten online in an attempt to pass them off as what is being sold. Great images are not enough, you can literally get images anywhere on the internet. Ask as much questions as you can about the items - What material was used? Will I get it in this exact colour? Is it available in this size?

Is the offer too good to be true?
The thought of purchasing an item at certain discounts advertised would make anyone giddy with excitement. After all, who doesn’t love a good discount? However, you might want to be really sure of the brand before participating in massive discount sales such as Black Friday. We took a poll asking people to state their bad experiences with shopping online and you can trust that scandals from Black Friday didn’t come last. Even the biggest e-commerce platforms are not exempt from Black Friday scandals. Again, you can avoid being a victim by checking reviews, or simply asking yourself, “Is the offer too good to be true?”

Buy from verified e-commerce platforms:
The best way to avoid stories that touch is to buy from legit e-commerce platforms that are verifiable on multiple fronts, or from platforms that connect customers directly to vendors like fashionville.shop. That way you can be sure you are getting the original products, directly from the source/manufacturer.
