Governor @jidesanwoolu today declared open the two-day @NGRSenate Committee Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution. The Gov demanded a special status for Lagos, saying that it was time for State police. He also asked for the entrenchment of True Fiscal Federalism.

According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, every Nigerian, male or female should be able to live their dreams and issues of female gender inclusion should also be an addition in the constitution. The public hearing was chaired by Senator @oluremitinubu and had in attendance @YAYIAdeola etc

It can't be said better.

Nigeria cannot make progress with the way it is currently arranged.

Only autonomous regional arrangements , with emphasis on finance, state police and fair play, can savage what is left of this contraption.

True federalism with clear implementation strategy and timeline.

That in itself covers a lot of other things.

Anything short of that is just another noise to waste Nigerians time until the next election.

Thinking:

This process happens roughly every 4 years, why don't the people that offer suggestions on Nairaland attend the public hearings and send in memos so that their suggestions can be heard?

lots not about state police alone, lots of Power given to FG should be removed and give to state and Local government
in fact, Education should be in the state list. true fiscal fedralism and

Police should be made to be separate from state governors too
the state house of Assembly should be autonomous and the Attorney general and minister of justice should be separated

Many won't show up now that they have an opportunity to make inputs to the constitution.
Immediately the event ends, they are back on Twitter to make ignorant assertions about the
constitution and offer "best" ideas on how to fix it.

Just copy the United States 10th amendment. Then limit federal powers.

The same constitution y'all abuse for your selfish benefits...

You all want the FG to give you more powers but you refuse to give the LGs more powers. You overtook their roles, eroded their independence, and turned them into an extension of your governments.

If the FG allows state police today, they'll all go the way of the federal police. They'll be incompetent and become the attack dogs of the state governments.

If Sanwo Olu could kill people at Lekki with federal police and the army, you can imagine the atrocities he would've committed with state police under his armpit.

The same thing applies to El Rufai. that one would've turned Kaduna into a police state.

Just look at the atrocities LASTMA and KAI are committing in Lagos, or the madness Amotekun committed in Oyo until a few months ago. Now imagine if all these guys had assault rifles? Imagine the horrors they would commit.

The constitution review should be thorough. It should hand more power to state and local governments but at the same time, ensure that all three levels of governments CANNOT misuse that power. The judiciary should be strengthened for that part. And it needs to have its own independent police/investigative/enforcement arm at both federal and state levels.

By the way, what sort of democratic program appoints Oluremi Tinubu as chairman?

What will be the out come? House assembly in 24 states must ratify them to become amendable. So how will it pass. Referendums are the way to self determination. Same politicians that put us in this mess are still wasting our resources. How can two days be enough to have meaningful changes?

1. True Federalism

2. Scrap 1999 constitution.

3. Remove age restriction on some certain job.

4. Political Office holder's salary be Government workers based. (Twice- if workers' salary increases, so theirs)

5. Provision for State police.

6. Court proceedings for ANY case shouldn't span more than a year.

7. Whoever killed intentionally, Should be immediately killed publicly haven't found guilty.

8. All prisoners in our correctional center should be made to farm ON GOVERNMENT FARMS IN EVERY STATE while serving their term

9. Corruption. Stealing public funds should made a serious crime which will make the perpetrators lose more than what he/she stolen, then BAN FOR LIFE from having anything to do with public offices

10. Ban on open grazing.. This concern me a lot

Just two days to resolve a fundamental problem like this, why the rush.
We are just not willing to move forward as a country.
