On the 30th May 1967,Enugu, 33 year old Military Governor of the Eastern Region, Lt Colonel Ojukwu, took to airwaves to announce that henceforth, the Eastern Region had seceded from Nigeria and was to be known as the "Republic Of Biafra"

After the announcement, Ojukwu took a motorcade around the city of Enugu and was met by a massive crowd of people who hailed and cheered him for declaring the East a separate country from Nigeria. Later that day at Ministers hill Enugu, the flag of Biafra and Coat of Arms were displayed, and Ojukwu was sworn in as its new President.

But why did Ojukwu declare Biafra?

Ojukwu declared Biafra because of something the military head of state of Nigeria, Lt Colonel Yakubu Gowon, did 3 days before.

Three days earlier on 27th of May, Gowon had also taken to airwaves to announce the introduction of a new Decree. This was decree 14 of 1967. The entire problem of Nigeria today comes from this one decree.

Decree 14 abolished the 4 Regions(Eastern, Western, North and Midwest) that were existing at the time, and replaced them with 12 new states. Six of those states went to Gowon and his fellow Northerners. The decree also abolished resource control, and took all resources from the Regions and put it in the hands of the Federal Government. With the North having majority of the states and control of the centre, the decree made the North the masters of Nigeria


Ojukwu immediately summoned the Eastern Nigeria Consultative Forum, a body that comprised of all the leaders of the 20 provinces that made up the Eastern Region, Traditional rulers, trade union leaders and labour leaders. They all arrived in Enugu on the 28th of May and Ojukwu told them that Gowons Decree 14 was not only a violation of the Aburi accord, it was a blatant attempt by Gowon and his fellow Northerners to reduce everyone to their slaves. Ojukwu asked the Forum to advice him on what to do next. The Consultative Forum brainstormed over the matter for 2 days and on the 29th of May, released a communique mandating Ojukwu to declare the Eastern Region a separate country "at the earliest possible date". A member of the Forum and head of Yenagoa province, Frank Opigo, an Ijaw man, took the decision of the Forum to Ojukwu at state house. There, he suggested the name "Biafra" to Ojukwu as a possible name for the new country

The next day, 30th of May 1967, Ojukwu declared the Republic Of Biafra

I guess you can read it was Decree #14 remains the rod which killed the regionalism in Nigeria. The rod was held by a good friend of Yoruba people whose name remains Yakubu Gowon.
