Auckland in New Zealand has been named the world's most liveable city, in an annual ranking that has been shifted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey ranked 140 cities on factors including stability, infrastructure, education and access to healthcare.

But the pandemic proved to be the defining factor in this year's list.

It meant European cities fell while those in Australia, Japan and New Zealand rose up the rankings.

Those island countries responded swiftly to the coronavirus outbreak and were able to minimise cases and loosen restrictions.

European Union countries, meanwhile, had a sluggish start to their vaccine rollout and many member states imposed tough lockdowns which hurt their performance in this year's survey.

Auckland topped the list followed by Osaka in Japan, Adelaide in Australia, Wellington in New Zealand and the Japanese capital Tokyo. No UK cities made the top ten.

"Auckland rose to the top of the ranking owing to its successful approach in containing the Covid-19 pandemic, which allowed its society to remain open and the city to score strongly," the EIU said.

"European cities fared particularly poorly in this year's edition," it added. "Eight of the top ten biggest falls in the rankings are European cities."

Vienna, for example, fell from first place to 12th. The Austrian capital had led the list for several years, usually tied at the top with Melbourne.

But Hamburg in northern Germany had the most dramatic fall - dropping 34 places to 47th.

This trend was motivated by a "stress on hospital resources" which the study said had increased for most German and French cities, resulting in a "deteriorated healthcare score".

Lockdown measures and restrictions on movement also reduced overall liveability, the study said.

"Cities across the world are now much less liveable than they were before the pandemic began, and we've seen that regions such as Europe have been hit particularly hard," the EIU said.

While the top of the list has shifted, the study said there had been much less movement at the bottom.

Damascus remains the city where life is most difficult, largely because of Syria's continuing civil war. Many of the cities that ranked poorly have been blighted by conflict, which has put pressure on their health systems and infrastructure.

How about Daura? Lagos should be proud to have made it to the list regardless. As long as it's a city where loads of individuals are making a living from, it doesn't matter where it is on BBC list. Everything is a work in progress.

Proud of what?

As for Lagos no work in progress..rara o

Lagos is one of d most dangerous cities ind world. U can’t be 100% of walking or driving Lagos without encountering nuisance or danger.
Everyday is one bad experience or d other someone is sharing. Go to twitter and read everyday story and experience. It’s either one chance experience or ritual abduction or knife stabbing in traffic or phone snatching in traffic or car window smashing in traffic by those touts trying to rob u. Pls pls Lagos is irredeemable. The city keeps deteriorating everyday.

Lagos is a typical example of a shithole with 80% of its habitants being a nuisance to d rest 20%normal humans existing tueh!

with the current poverty data and crime rate...Lagos is sitting on a time bomb. shey d other day it was ikoyi inhabitants crying their eldorado has been taken over by touts and alaye boys..

This is no longer about "Eko o ni baje" "Eko ti baje baje"

There are a lot of things that Lagos can do to help improve and blaze the trail for Nigeria

A few of these are (note these problems are common throughout the country)

- Cover open gutters
There is no reason for Lagos to still have kpotopoto poo and pee mix with algae gutters open to the public.

-Enforce traffic laws
I don’t mean officers just standing at junctions, because most traffic infractions happen on the move and not while stationary. So you need a mobile force to PATROL and Pull Over malefactors. I once told someone that in the U.S, you can’t change lanes without using your signal and he didn’t believe me. The devil as the day is in the details. You can not overlook things like people driving on lanes, in the bush path, not using signals, and expect to have an orderly traffic situation, it will NEVER EVER HAPPEN.

-Reduce hawking/begging on streets
This one is kinda hard, cause of the economic situation in the country, but it will be disastrous in the long term to have so many out of school children live their lives on the streets chasing after cars.

-Provide Pipe Borne Water
A lot of houses already have boreholes for water, but a lot also don’t have this. It would be nice to provide one of the most basic infrastructure to the people in the form of pipe borne water.

All in all Lagos and the rest of our lands will continue to improve, and hopefully in leaps and bounds with the right leadership in place.

Very intelligent analysis.
