TWENTY-EIGHT days before his exit from the Agodi Government House, Ibadan, Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State yesterday whittled down the powers of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

The governor removed the Alaafin as the Permanent Chairman of the Council of Obas and Chiefs.

With the bill Alao-Akala signed into law yesterday, the chairmanship will now rotate among the Alaafin, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi Ajagungbade.

But, in a swift reaction, Oba Adeyemi declared the action as an exercise in futility.

During the April 26 governorship election, Alao-Akala, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, lost in all the four councils in the ancient city of Oyo to his Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

An amendment bill hurriedly passed by the House of Assembly and signed into law by Alao-Akala yesterday put a stop to Alaafin’s permanent headship of the Obas’ council.

A statement by Alao-Akala’s spokesman, Prince Dotun Oyelade, yesterday indicated that the signing of the law tagged: ‘Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs Amendment Law 2011’ supercedes similar law enacted in 2000 by the Alhaji Lam Adesina’s administration.

By this development, the chairmanship of the council has become rotational among the Olubadan, Soun and Alaafin in that order.

The council’s deputy chairmanship also becomes rotational among the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Eleruwa of Eruwa, Okere of Saki and Aseyin of Iseyin in that order.

There were concerns that the decision was taken to get back at Oba Adeyemi who abandoned Alao-Akala and supported ACN candidates at all levels during the elections.

Oyelade, however, denied any political undertone to the government’s decision.

“It is invidious and shallow for anyone to read political motive to this issue white to our mind. The time is ripe and just,” he said.

In his reaction, Oba Adeyemi said: “I remain the permanent chairman of the Council of Obas and Chiefs and a thousand Alao-Akala cannot change that. The law says that in exercising any power conferred on the governor on this matter, he shall consult the Council of Obas. It is clear he has not done so. What he did is a nullity because the matter is in court. He cannot force his will on the court and the people. He has less than four weeks to leave the government so, why is he doing this if not for mischief?

“The Alaafin is the permanent chairman of the council and there are six vice chairmen – Olubadan, Soun, Eleruwa, Olugbon, Okere and Aseyin. Akala is just trying to disrespect the judiciary and what he did is in bad taste. This is a clear case of recklessness, the antics of a drowning man. He cannot get away with this illegality”.

Oyo monarchs reject rotational chairmanship, back Alaafin

MEMBERS of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs may be heading for a showdown with Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala over the headship of the obaship council, as they have rejected Tuesday’s amendment of the council’s law, which makes the chairmanship of the group rotational.

Rising from an emergency meeting at the Alaafin’s palace in the ancient Oyo town, the royal fathers, in a communiqué, dismissed the purported amendment, describing it as “an exercise in futility.”

Present at the meeting were the Iba of Kishi, Oba Moshood Oyewole Lawal, Onjo of Okeho, Oba Rafiu Osuolale Mustapha, Okere of Saki, Oba Olatoyese Kilani Olarinre II, Sabiganna of Iganna, Oba Soliu Azeez Agunloye IV.

Others were Bashorun of Oyo, Olokaka of Okaka Oba Azeez Ayoola, Onigbeti of Igbeti, Oniware of Iware, Aresa-Adu of Iresa Adu and the Oloje of Oje-Owode.

Governor Alao-Akala had on Tuesday signed the amendment law which stripped the Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, of the permanent headship of the council.

The new law makes the chairmanship position rotational among the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Soun of Ogbomosoland and the Alaafin of Oyo in that order while the council’s deputy chairmanship is also to be rotated among the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Eleruwa of Eruwa, Okere of Saki and Aseyin of Iseyin for a period of two years.

In the communiqué read by the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Samuel Osunbade, on behalf of the council members, the royal fathers said apart from the fact that the subject matter was already an issue before the court, they have discovered about 10 fundamental errors in the amendment law.

Describing the governor’s action as incapable of standing the test of time, the council noted that since the state government and House of Assembly were parties to the court case, any action taken during the pendency of the suit was a nullity.

The council also congratulated the state governor-elect, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, over his victory at the polls. It called on any aggrieved candidates in the general elections to seek redress in court and not resort to self-help by taking laws into their hands.

The monarchs wrote: “In any contest, there must be winners and losers. The electorate had given their verdicts. We appeal to all to accept the verdicts as declared by the INEC. Those who are aggrieved should seek legal redress. There can only be progress and stability in an atmosphere devoid of violence.
