These 3 factors are responsible for the proliferation of bad leadership/governance in Nigeria.

If you've ever wondered why Nigeria does not value research in critical sector, and our vehicle of progress is rigmarolling/stagnant, one of your answers could be contained in this write up.

1. Religion: religious bigottry and fanatism is catalystic to encouraging sick leadership. We are a country dominated by two major religions namely Christianity and Islam.

Some Nigerians are too religious to see error and danger when a particular person is occupying a sensitive national office because he either belongs to their denomination or religion.

Some religious bodies like CAN, PFN, MURIC, SCIA would rather pitch their tent defendng a clown who is mentally, morally, academically, and courageously unfit to occupy a particular office.

2. Politics: It is a norm is every part of the world that politicians dance to the tune of their party interest even when such a move, policy(ies) and agenda are myopic, parasitic and anathema.

Accusations and counter-accusation becomes norm between the ruling party and the opposition party(ies). Party henchmen in this part of the world do not see anything bad in every demonic and anti-posterity steps taken by their ruling party.

Africa's posterity and prosperity are two major victims of this under the guise of 'party loyalty'. President Trump's actions to undermine the US democracy was well resisted by some of his core political party top guns.

Politicians in some western countries see their countries beyond the present/ruling leadership under their political party, hence, the reason why they openly converge against and resist any undemocratic measure(s) taken by their ruling parties.

Most incumenben leaders in African become despots and draconians, tough and cruel against opposition voices and clamping down becomes the order of the day in the name of 'narional security.

I remember this 'national security interest' was the brain behind the killings of Gen. Maman Vatsa, Ken Saro-wiwa, Dele Giwa etc. Though the aforemrioned state murders were under the military, they were well-defendere by the ruling class of the day because it favoured their constituency (military), appointment, business (contract) and money.

3. Tribe: Tribal jingosim is cancerous to our present and posterity. It's so obvious that our dream of greatness will remain a fiction with the volume of tribalism in our blood.

PANDEF, ACF, ARG, NEF, YEF, SMBLF, YCE etc are few of the regional/ethnic bodies who are all fighting for the supremacy of their respective regions.

One funny deduction from this nationalities groups is that they suddenly become a strong voice in supporting a son/daughter from their land when such is occupying a key/sensitive national seat.

The 1999 constitution is fair enough to allow quota system but is major clog to our speed in vital areas. Academic and mental meritocracy are being sacrificed for tribal unfitness.

Nigeria would have moved beyond this level if our country is run like the private sector or western countries where your tribe/race is not required before you can be employed. Merit through mental and academic fitness is the major propelling force of the western countries and the private sector.

Imagine, how would the entertainment industry look like if quota system is the major criteria for signing an artists. Imagine an European teams where tribe/race is the only determinant for signing a player.

The US is a preferred country for most intellectual folks because the system there encourages raw talents to be harnessed and refined Into productive ventures. Your mental fitness and academic alertness is a raw gold in the US.

Tribalism has not helped us in this country. I believe a competitive spirit will be revived among the states and regions if tribalism and quota system is axed out of our blood and Constitution.

We can't be having a varying cut-off marks for admission into our universities under the guise of 'academically disadvantaged states' while the end products don't get varying certification to be hired in their respective industry/sector.

Marginalisation is painful when there are competent men/women from your region but are being sacrificed on the alter of ethnic supremacy by the current leader/president/governor. Seniority is often being bent to allow a junior rank take over a certain seat because the junior officer is an ethnic kinsman of the president/governor or leader.

Promotion in the civil service is not alway based on examination but body language of the 'oga-at-the-top'. This abberant character kills zeal for hardwork and demoralises the spirit of patriotism. We're loosing our watershed brains to premature retirement in the name of preferring our choice tribesman to occupying a certain office while forgetting all the investment we made in training the seniors to attain their current levels.

We've seen some presidents choosing successive IGs from the ranks ok AIG while overlooking the more senior rank of DIG. Brigadier Generals are most chosen to become Chief of Army Start, Chief of Defence Staff and that will automatically send those in the ranks of Major Generals and Lieutenant Generals into sudden retirement. Nothing can be more wasteful than the simple analogy I painted above, the cost and time we invested in training them are wasted because we deny our system from reaping in the wealth of knowledge their training/certification have earned them.

While some southern states have a high JAMB cut-off mark for admission, some core northern indigenes are treated with kids gloves in lowering their admission standard which most times leads to half-baked products.
