Title: NIGERIA IS A ZOO
Author: Emma Powerful
Published: 2021

"Nigeria is a zoo!" That is how Mazi Nnamdi Kanu aptly describes Nigeria.

It is a tragic fact of history that the Whites once contemptuously regarded Blacks as monkeys. That racist contempt was their self-justification for the enslavement of Africans and the colonisation of Africa. That racist contempt and an unending greed for Africa's natural resources fuels the neocolonialism that still exists in quasi-independent African countries to this day.

There is no need to remind anyone of the genocidal Nigeria Civil War in which Nigeria conspired with Britain, the USSR and the Arab world to forcefully drag Biafrans back into an unjust unworkable union. We had no choice but to surrender, lick our wounds and rebuild our land. Chukwu Okike Abiama prepared a banquet for us in the presence of our enemies and we have flourished against all odds. Over fifty years on, Nigeria is a failed state. More of a failure than it was at its independence in 1960. More of a failure than it was at its return to democracy in 1999. The year 2000 marked the resurgence of clamours for Biafra. Since then, the world turned a blind eye and deaf ear to the cries of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). The world ignored the legalistic approach of the Bilie Human Rights Initiative (BHRI). The world laughed at the aggressive attempts of the Biafra Zoinist Movement (BZM). Until the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) captured the world's attention after the 2015 arrest of its leader by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government of Nigeria. Or rather, of "Zoogeria" or of the "Zoological Republic of Nigeria".

On the surface, the name Zoogeria or the Zoological Republic of Nigeria, that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu prefers to call it, appears to be an insult. A deeper look, however, reveals that Nigeria is being run by Major-General Buhari like an animal farm. His regime has made a mess of the country's democracy. His regime is riddled with human rights violations and disregard for the rule of law. Worst of all, his regime has entrenched nepotism. Under his watch, Nigeria has become a nepotistic zoo which overlooks the terroist-bloodbaths and terrorist-carnage perpetuated all over the country by his terrorist-kinsmen the Fulani herdsmen.

Allow me to reiterate that Nigeria is a failed state. There is a sinister plan by non-Nigerian Fulani herdsmen to overrun the country and turn it into a grazing field for their cattle. While the Nigerian Fulani helmsmen have an agenda to Islamize Nigeria, enthrone Sharia law and establish emirates all over the country. In all this, the southern part of Nigeria is their destination for annexation. They are determined to fulfil Usman Dan Fodio's jihadic quest of dipping the Quran in the Atlantic ocean. Tufiakwa! We must act swiftly before the zookeeper Major-General Buhari carries out his pledge to implement Sharia in the entire federation of Nigeria. We must take decisive action, before he and his minions further downgrade Nigeria from a zoo into a museum of extinct ethnic animals.

Without further ado, I present the four options below:

OPTION A
A is for Aburi. The Aburi Accord has always been the only viable path to a fair and equitably united Nigeria. If Nigeria were to remain as one country, it must embrace a confederate system of at least twelve or thirteen semiautonomous ethnic regions. A sub-option within this option is for the country to be restructed into a real federal system not a unitary system masquerading as a federal system as it currently is. There must also be a referedum clause included in the constitution to make room for the peaceful exit of any of the federating units that decides to seek self-determination in the future.

OPTION B
B is for Biafra. Option B is what Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu opted for after Nigeria rejected Option A (the Aburi Accord) which they had initially agreed to. Biafra needs no reintroduction. It existed as an independent country from 1967 to 1970. Prior to that time, it was only recognized as the "Bight of Biafra" on old maps of the African continent. Biafra encompasses the old eastern region of Nigeria where the Igbo, Ijaw, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ibibio, Efik and other ethnic groups could be found. Biafra is what Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are agitating for.

OPTION C
This option emphasizes self-determination for the Igbo nation or ala-Igbo. A few Igbo-Biafrans have argued that Biafra lost the Nigeria Civil War of 1967 to 1970 because of sabotage by some of the non-Igbo Biafran ethnic groups. They site the prevailing fears of Igbo-domination and Igbo-phobia amongst non-Igbo peoples who accuse Biafrans of eyeing crude oil and access to the sea. They warn that even if Biafra successfully breaks away from Nigeria, it would descend into another war of the ethnic minorities of the Niger-Delta versus the Igbo majority. On that note, they make a case for a one hundred percent homogeneous Igbo nation comprising the five Igbo states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo in addition to the Anioma area (in Delta state) and the Igweocha area (in Rivers state). They believe that the Igbo language would flourish as it would be the official language in a homogeneous Igbo nation as opposed to an English lingua franca in Biafra. They deemphasize the landlocked nature of this proposed homogeneous Igbo nation by pointing out other landlocked countries around the world that prosper despite being landlocked.

OPTION D
Herein lies a proposition for a South Nigeria Republic. They support the disintegration of Nigeria but only into two countries. Perhaps first mooted by Major Gideon Orkar in his 1990 coup speech where he decried the marginalization, oppression and enslavement of the Middle-Belt and the South by the North and proclaimed the North excised from Nigeria. Libyan leader Gaddafi echoed a similar sentiment, sometime in 2010, when he suggested that Nigeria be split into two along religious lines of a largely Muslim North and a largely Christian South if there is to be sustainable peace. According to the main proponents of this idea, the South Nigeria Republic would comprise of the South-West, South-East, South-South and the North-Central geopolitical zones. In essence, they plead that after the disintegration of Nigeria, the South and Middle Belt should remain together as one country called South Nigeria instead of splitting into three or four smaller countries like Oodua, Biafra, Niger-Delta etc.

In summary,
Option A is for a conferederate zoo or a restructured zoo.
Option B is for Biafra and the breakup of the zoo.
Option C is for a homogeneous Igbo nation encircled by the zoo.
While Option D is for a South Nigeria Republic splitting the zoo into two.

I have tried to be as objective as possible in presenting these four options which were not originally formulated by me. Pardon me if you noticed my undeniable preference for Option B of Biafra by the Biafrans and for the Biafrans. Now, I must leave you to make your own choice.

Which of these four options would you choose?
