While inaugurating the two Committees yesterday, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the constitution and inauguration of the Committee on Improper Dressing was informed by his Inaugural meeting with staff and students where he emphasised the need for decorum in dressing especially among staff and students of the University.

He noted that though, the University will not introduce uniforms for her students, yet, staff and students should mind the way they dress on campus and the type of dresses they wear to work and classes, adding that ‘’the way you dress is the way people will address you’’.

Speaking further, the Vice-Chancellor frowned at the flagrant display of nudity and tattered clothing in the University community, and charged the Committee to monitor the dress styles of staff and students within the campus and make sure they dress properly, as the University will no longer condone improper dressing among her staff and students henceforth. He enjoined them to give him regular report on the matter and any other thing they think will make the institution better in that regard.

Continuing, Prof. Elom urged the Taskforce on Environment to ensure harmonization of vendors within the campus and make sure they are positioned at the proper places designated for their activities, and thereby stop the ongoing indiscriminate display and sell of goods on every part of the campus by private individuals.

“People should not be allowed to sell inside the class rooms or showcase their goods and services randomly in the university”, the Vice-Chancellor stated, adding ‘’ensure effective cleanliness and orderliness on campus, and discharge your duties without fear in order to make the environment neater and orderly’’.

While responding, the Chairman of the Committee on Improper Dressing,Prof. Gloria M.T. Emezue, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for constituting the Committee and assured him that they would hit the ground running in order to deliver on their mandates of restoring decorum on campus in the area of staff and students’ dressing.

In the same vein, Dr. Amobi Ekwe, who chairs the Taskforce on Environment commended the Vice-Chancellor for constituting the Committee, noting that it came at a time when the focus of the whole world is on environment and climate change.

He said: “The issue of environment is weighty, mighty and something to take very serious”.

He assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Committee’s total commitment to deliver on their mandates and make the university environmental-friendly while also appealing for Management’s support to actualize their goals.

Members of the two Committees are made up of staff, students and the University internal security officials.
