The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Nigeria’s economy could reach 2.5 percent in 2021 as incipient recovery in the economic activity takes root.

The Fund said in a statement after Staff Concludes Virtual visit with Nigeria that, inflation is also expected to remain elevated in 2021.

However, the IMF said that inflation rate may likely decelerate in the second half of the year to reach about 15.5 percent.

It hinged its projection on inflation around the likely positive impact of the removal of border controls and the elimination of base effects from elevated food price levels.

“The incipient recovery in economic activity is projected to take root and broaden among sectors, with GDP growth expected to reach 2.5 percent in 2021.

“Inflation is expected to remain elevated in 2021, but likely to decelerate in the second half of the year to reach about 15.5 percent, following the removal of border controls and the elimination of base effects from elevated food price levels,” the IMF wrote in the statement.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Nigeria’s economy is “recovering gradually” following the negative impact of COVID-19, but noted that the unemployment and inflation rates remain elevated.

The IMF team led by Jesmin Rahman held virtual meetings with the Nigerian authorities from June 1-8, 2021 to discuss recent economic, financial developments and outlook.

The team said recent exchange rate measures are encouraging, and further reforms are needed to achieve a fully unified and market-clearing exchange rate. The resurfacing of fuel subsidies is concerning, particularly in the context of low revenue mobilisation.

Unemployment will remain because businesses were supposed to expand and absorb job seekers are being frustrated by harsh government polices, so rather than employ, they find themselves sacking. The unemployment we're facing currently in Nigeria is caused by the government and can only be solved by a government that has the plight of the masses at heart.

This I have seen.

Imagine the paradox "economy improve" but "unemployment remains" .There are various degrees of frustration but unemployment is unrivaled. You want to contribute to your society but no one is hiring. You want to practice what you learnt in school but it's not happening.

You struggle to raise capital to start a business, but of course it will take more than grace for it to thrive. If at all you able to raise the capital.

Everyone thinks you are not trying. Everyone use you as funny example of someone who is not employed. "see brother John, he finished years ago. Till today e never find work''. Who do we blame?

When the oldies boast about how available job was during their time, I have to tell them it's a lie. I doubt if Nigeria has ever been in such a good shape both politically and economically.

Socially, Nigeria is burnt out on all angles. Who do we blame? the root of all evil is hunger. In a bad economy, the crime rate will soar.
Hunger is bad. Unemployment is evil

If this is not good news for you, please create your own good news for yourself.
Nigeria will bounce back soon.
If IMF and World Bank say nothing about Nigeria in a month, there staffs will not get their salary for that month.
That is why they can come today and say Nigeria will collapse tomorrow and tomorrow they will tell you Nigeria will not collapse again but grow to become top 7 biggest economy in 20years.
