ABUJA, May 05, (THEWILL) – Baring any last minute changes, THEWILL can report that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Presidency have reached a deal that would see the North Central zone and in particular, the current President of the Senate, David Mark, retain his position in the incoming Senate.

Also, the existing status quo in the House of Representatives would remain unchanged as the South West geo-political zone and in particular, Hon. Muraina Ajibola (PDP Oyo), one of the few that survived the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) onslaught in the zone at the last election would emerge as the new Speaker for the House of Representatives.

Sources informed THEWILL that these were the highpoints reached in a power-sharing arrangement reached at Obudu, Cross Rivers State by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday.

Similarly, the South East zone, which had mounted serious clamour for the position of the Speaker, may be consoled with the strategic office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) in addition to retaining the office of Deputy Senate President.

For the North East zone, it was learnt that in the new power arrangement, they would produce the Chairmanship of the ruling PDP and also retain the position of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

These changes it was reliably learnt was as a result of an agreement reached by the leadership of the PDP, who met in Obudu Mountain Resort with President Goodluck Jonathan who rounded off his working retreat in the State.

THEWILL learnt that the choice of Ajibola was to fulfill the pre-election promise said to have been made by President Jonathan and the leadership of PDP to retain both Mark and Dimeji Bankole in their respective offices if they were re-elected.

The choice of Ajibola according to the source was that in the absence Bankole who failed the contest, he among the lawmakers coming to the House is the only ranking member from the zone.

He also satisfies the criteria of having a Muslim Speaker for the House and a Christian President for the Senate, as was the case in the out-going National Assembly.[b]

Meanwhile there are strong indications that Senator Ike Ekweremadu the current holder of the office of the Deputy Senate President (DSP) will be facing a strong challenge from his colleagues from the region for the office. The opposition will be coming from Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) Uche Chukwumerije (Abia North), Nkechi Nwoga (Abia Central), and Ayogu Eze, all ranking senators like Ekweremadu.[/b]

However, National Assembly observers are of the view that Senator Nwaogu may be brandishing affirmative action to sell her ambition. This is in addition to the fact that the region would want the position to be moved to another state since Enugu has been occupying most of the political offices zoned to the south east in the past.

As for the office of the SGF, there are speculations that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is strongly pushing for the former transport Minister Ojo Maduekwe to clinch it.

However, THEWILL check reveals that governors from the zone who allegedly warned Obasanjo to steer clear and allow the zone produce the Speaker, would rather the position is given to the former Senate President Chief Anyim Pius Anyim. The choice of Anyim is equally more generally acceptable from the people of the region.

Before now, it was learnt that PDP’s post election decision was to zone the Speakership of the House of Representatives to the South East. It was based on that decision that the trio of Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, Eziuche Ubani and Bethel Amadi and a few other lawmakers from that zone began the clamour and campaigns the office.

Nonetheless, the governors of the South East geo-political zone will meet this weekend in Enugu to discuss the zoning and the distribution of the key positions in the National Assembly. It was learnt that they are still insistent on the offices of Senate President and Speaker, House of Representatives.
