The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ebonyi State, Medical Parents’ Forum, an umbrella body of all parents and guardians of students of College of Medicine of the institution has pledged to build a female hostel for medical students.

This hint was dropped yesterday when the Executive of the Medical Parents’ Forum paid the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom a courtesy visit, to congratulate him on his emergence as the 3rd Vice-Chancellor of the University, and more importantly, to thank him for the pre-clinical accreditation of the College of Medicine by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission.

The AE-FUNAI Parents’ Forum is a child of necessity that was formed in 2016, to help in bridging the palpable infrastructural gaps that exist in the University. Since its inception, the Forum has helped the University in providing lecture seats, engineering equipment and facilities, perimeter fencing, water bore holes, buildings and many more. In fact, the Medical Parents’ Forum in particular, had constructed a hostel for medical students in 2019, one of the requirements for the initial accreditation of the MBBS programme by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. The hostel is being occupied by male students of the programme.

While speaking during the visit, the Chairman, Medical Parents’ Forum, Chief Edward Ngene, expressed gratitude to God for choosing Prof. Elom as the Vice-Chancellor of the University, adding that with him in the saddle, the University will be taken to greater heights.

He also used the opportunity to plead with the Vice-Chancellor to allocate a parcel of land to the Forum for the construction of a hostel to accommodate female students of the Medical Programme.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the general AE-FUNAI Parents’ Forum, Engr. Chidi Onwe Ogah, who accompanied the Medical Parents’ Forum to the event, noted that with Prof. Elom as Vice-Chancellor, the University will witness extraordinary development in all aspects due to his wealth of experience in the university system. He also pledged the continued support of the Forum for the infrastructural development of the University.

Expressing his happiness on the decision of the Medical Parents’ Forum to construct a female hostel for medical students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elom, described it as a welcome development. He noted that his administration will do everything possible to support them to actualize the objective.

He also noted that the College of Medicine was a top priority of his administration, stressing that he will do everything to ensure the College became one of the best in the country.

Continuing, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the pre-clinical accreditation of College of Medicine of the University within 3 years of its establishment was a rare feat, noting that many Universities in Nigeria have such accreditation between 6 to 8 years, but the University did it in 3 years.
