I think Reuters got this all wrong.

The ELN has no links with the FARC.

Both rebel groups are totally different from each other. At no point did the ELN split from the FARC (if that is what Reuters is insinuating here).

The only similarities between both groups is mainly down to the fact that the they both have leftist/Marxist/Leninist leanings and came into existence in the 60s after the violencia. Asides that, they are both different groups.

The ELN actually has a smaller membership than FARC but they are the more intransigent of both groups.
