And come to think of it, wasn't it this same PDP that started this one-party state trend beginning from Obasanjo's tenure amidst cheers from PDP members and supporters that the largest party in Africa was growing even larger and that the rest parties were nothing other than regional pressure groups? Since when has it become a bad thing for the largest party in Africa to keep growing larger while the others remain regional pressure groups?

I beg to disagree with you. Parties don't evolve ideologies on their own. What they do is to adopt as their ideology the public consensus that is trending at that moment. For example the Republican Party of the USA was founded chiefly on the ideology of abolition of slavery because it had at that moment become the national moral question as to whether it wasn't hypocritical of America to continue upholding slave ownership 100 years after their independence declaration that all men are equal before God. Also, Americans were beginning to question the essence of large government. The founders of the Republican Party realized that if they must win presidential elections immediately they must evolve an ideological base which provides an answer to these issues around which national consensuses were being built and that was why Abraham Lincoln campaigned with reducing the size of government and emancipation of slaves to become elected as the first president from the Republican Party.

Now, bringing it down to Nigeria, the question is: do we as a people have any issue based national consensus other than which tribe's, regions'or religion's turn it is to produce the next president? The answer is a big no hence the parties are always compelled to adopt zoning as their major ideologies. Parties like National Conscience Party, Kowa Party, etc despite their concrete issues-based manifestos ironically don't command the sympathy of Nigerian voters because they only espouse their beautiful ideologies about the economy, security, infrastructure, job creation, etc without saying anything on zoning of positions should they get to power.
This is why APC and PDP will remain dominant for long as they always speak to the sentiments of Nigerians through their visible provisions for zoning despite being bereft of economic blueprints.
The day Nigerians choose to build national consensus on issues like stable electricity, rapid infrastructural development, etc and discard concerns about zoning is the day these two big parties will evolve ideologies built on fundamental issues.
