The number of smartphones in Nigeria that was 23.3 million in 2019 is expected to be 154 million by 2025. This can be considered as a great opportunity for entertainment service providers like DStv who have been using technology, including mobile, over the years to provide quality service and at the convenience of its subscribers.
DStv is riding on the fact that Nigeria, like other countries in Africa, is a mobile-first market by designing its offerings accordingly.
Beyond trying to serve the customers at their convenience, no other cable-TV platform in Nigeria is investing heavily into local content production like DStv.
As of 2012, the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce affirmed that DStv had invested $200 million (about ₦31 billion, according to the exchange then) in developing local skills, technology transfer, local workforce, and production of local content. This is outside the $2.1 billion (about ₦800 billion in 2019’s exchange rate) that Accenture, an accounting and consulting firm in Nigeria, estimated to be DStv’s contribution to Nigeria’s economy between 2015 and 2019.
In his comment about the company’s $2.1 billion contribution to the economy, MultiChoice Nigeria CEO, John Ugbe affirmed that the entertainment giant has a responsibility towards providing socio-economic value through its core business activities in the country.
Beyond the figure quoted by Accenture, Ugbe in a 2020 interview revealed that the company had invested about Seventy Million Dollars towards developing the Nigerian Football League over the course of seven years.
