Were you not in this country when COWS were running those factories?
Chicken has finally come home to roost, even when government was giving cheap forex to the so called small scale industries, no be to lodge the money into some useless foreign investments and ship saw dust into the country?.
Na bonded terminal be their clearing zone and customs are their collaborators.

All these are irrelevant to my questions.

The collapse of the manufacturing sub-sector of the Nigerian economy is due to multiple factors but the major factor had it's roots in the conditions attached to the IMF loans which Nigeria took in 1986.

The reason is simple, cheap goods from China. Cheap goods from China crashed manufacturing across the globe. Some people have been blaming the dead beat govt, but the honest truth is our importers flooded the market with cheap Chinese good.

These cheap Chinese good have helped many Nigerian buy certain commodities that were big deals back them.

Its obvious made in Nigeria goods are too expensive for Nigerian, so what ever product we are manufacturing in Nigeria should have the Nigerian price "Cheap" attached to it.

We have to make sure we are not over charging our people in the Name of manufacturing.

Please drop your own opinion.

why are the Chinese goods cheaper than those made in Nigeria ?

That is the problem ......and it all boils down to inept leadership.

Nigeria's wages has always been ridiculously low since the 80's, we have coal and Crude to generate power, we have iron ore and aluminum ore, we have always had trained manpower, the finance is there and this are the bedrock of every developed nation today -so why have Nigeria righteously failed to drop the tag of a developing country?

cement is relatively more expensive now it's produced in Nigeria than when we imported most of it.

A bag of rice increased 400% in price now that we produce most of it than when we imported most of it.

chicken ? etc.
Once dangote refinery comes on stream, importation of refined crude will be greatly limited and subsidy gone- watch the increase that will occur then.
No matter how you put it,inept and corrupt leadership caused the collapse and is mitigating the development of Nigeria

True.

We are also very greedy.

All these nonsense is happening cos only a few are manufacturing.

What will be the price of cement if we have like twenty companies manufacturing cement?

Nigerians are naturally greedy as regards the price of their goods. Go on Esty you will see Nigerians selling cloths of 2k Naira for 80 usd.

We greedy.

Things will change if many of us go into manufacturing.

There is a way.

If fuel price goes up, then the Evs will take over.

Our industry, along with just about everything else in Nigeria, fails because of flaws in our underlying ideologies.

Smart nations do not get stuck "believing". They adopt a kaizen approach, which is "ask knock and seek", and until we as individuals change our 'philosophy of living' from what it is and that holds us back, to what it can become and that would move us forward when we use our senses, we shall continue to tremble!

Ford is an example of Nigeria.

Ford has given up on cars. The only “car” it still manufactures is the Mustang. It killed all its other car lines. And that sales volume just went to Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Kia, etc. And total car sales, after having collapsed every year for years, collapsed by another 82% in June year-over-year, to just 2,868 Mustangs and a handful of leftover Fusions that were still sitting on dealer lots.

And heres what kaizen helps achieve.

And in June, Toyota’s total sales skyrocketed by 40%, blowing away GM and Ford and everyone. The hated cars that Ford threw under the bus, so to speak? Well, Toyota sold 68,771 cars, up 57% year-over-year. Ford sold 2,868 cars in June. Ford’s idiotic decision to walk away from cars just handed this market to Toyota and others.

You're more likely to get what I mean if management has been part of your education.

What is killing American manufacuring is excessive capitalisim and their government is no longer involved in business.

The moment the government leave business the manufacturing economy will crash.

US companies are battling with companies backed and sponsored by thier government.

Its not just a one man business.

Secondly American products are usually expensive because US companies love big bucks. Eg is beat by DRE, iphones, etc.
They love to sell expensive like Nigerians.

Same fate experienced by Ford will surly affect Apple in the future.

The US is fond of runing a one giant economy, this will change for them if they pen up their manufacturing industry to the masses.

This don't make sense. "Government is no longer involved in business." "US companies are battling with companies backed and sponsored by their government."

I take it the companies "backed and sponsored by their government" are not American, but Chinese perhaps? Kinda shows government involvement in Chinese business is beneficial to Chinese companies, don't you think?

I would not agree that government involvement in Nigeria businesses would benefit Nigeria though. Not the corrupt and incompetent governments we have.

Not true, American manufacturing is bedeviled by what made it strong

1) the quality standards of products made in America is one of the strictest world wide. To beat some of them, companies relocate to climes with less strindent quality measures.
The shacman and foton trucks rampant in Nigeria can't sell in USA etc.

2) wages in America and Europe are very high hence, companies find it cheaper to move to china . Recently the wages in china are going up and that is why china is moving less sensitive sectors in manufacturing eg clothing, shoe making etc to Africa.

The above two makes American products more expensive than most others.

China ,the only country challenging the American manufacturing industry built up theirs through theft and reverse engineering of technologies from other nations, and by taking charge of the African continent (trade).Your typical African country is led by greedy and inept rulers and that is why, instead of the African continent experiencing an industrial revolution, it will skip pass most of them (countries) while we experience political And economic colonization by the Chinese

Thats what they told you.

The real truth.

Us companies love big bucks. They over charge for their products.
It has nothing to do with quality.

Even iphones that are made in China with cheap labor are so expensive.

In the days of Nokia we got fantastic phone at lower prices.

They love to sell very high.

And their manufacturing industry is closed to the masses.

Its a one giant affair.

Government will not run biz, but they will own biz.

The moment government abandon manufacturing for the capitalist, it will spell doom.

The capitalist will run the economy to the ground.

This don't make sense. "Government is no longer involved in business." "US companies are battling with companies backed and sponsored by their government." These are the words of an irresponsible government.

Government should invest massively in business. Its working wonders in ASIA.

The USA and Eroupean governments were investing in business in thise olden days and it paid off. The govs even sponsored various trips by exploitative crooks to Africa. That will show you how deep their govt participated in business in those olden days.

If you think its wrong for gov to be part of biz, why is the Asian economy booming?

The greedy capitalist of the West deceived the govt and masses with = "Government is no longer involved in business."

In summery the Chinese and Japanese government are behind the success and domination.

A pure capitalist economy is evil.

Government most own and invest in business to enable them make favorable laws that will benefit the country. The government will also invest in very high capital intensive projects to enable her biz men make great profit and minimize losses.

I guess you are right, government should invest in business.

In fact, I think Nigerian government already does invest in business. I mean, look at the concessions given to the likes of Dangote, and the fact that heavily indebted companies never go bankrupt nor pay their electricity bills, that is government investment, surely

Just know that money government invests in companies and business is tax money that is not invested in schools and hospitals and proper infrastructure that only government can provide and that creates employment, while the businesses government invests in is those of their cronies who become billionaires who buy their education and health abroad and create employment abroad too.

The question is why are China goods cheaper when we have cheaper labour and power ( diesel and gas are super cheap )

chinese workers are mostly college-educated(not yet university), they master a lot of professional skills.

chinese production lines are massive semi-automatic which churns out 100 times more products than the small manual mills in india or vietnam.

although the initial investment and threshold is much higher in terms of advanced production lines, they yield more profit per single product.

a small mill in india produces 1000 items everyday, while chinese competitor 10 million per day. they are sold at the same price, because they are the same items. chinese earn 1000 times more profit. let alone machine-made items are more quality, and chinese workers are skillful for machines.

if i am an investor, i would prefer china to india. even though chinese request 7 times more salary, their daily output is 1000 times more.

and, you may find all items from china, from a nail to the space station .

suppose nigeria or india wants develop medicine industrial, you need to provide everything , from the ingredient powders to the syrup coating capsule....the paper package, the logo printer, the ink to print the logo, the each component of a printer...

the whole industrial is beyond any country' ability . not even america can do it. it needs hundreds of million workers and experts. your small countries do not even have such a number.

as to fake products from china, that is for developing country buyers only. chinese use the best quality , they ship the lesser ones to third world countries, because ppl from there can not afford standard products.

being a developing country itself, china enjoys the privilige of being the party to be the acceptor of the high tec patents from the developed countries if the latter choose to invest in china . that is how all the third world countries do . india only allows west medicinal companies to invest before they transfer the patents. and india supplies the labors and land. that is why made-in-india covid vaccines are actually for the West , and last month india was short of vaccines though it produced a lot. they can not use them for india without the permission of america and EU.

why the world hates china so much ? it has been escolating its industrial levels, more focusing on high tec sectors which aim to compete directly with the West. meanwhile, china is jettisoning some poorly-paid, environment-hostile jobs to other less developed countries, say, vietnam, india....

just because india and vietnam are georgraphically close to china, they take the outsourcing jobs from chinese bosses, and the finished products will be shippd back to china, as well as West countries. as to the fake products consumed by indian, are made from local india mills or the from the leftover of the chinese-invested factories. of course, the upper class indian will buy the real china products , which are really made in china and sold in china and used by chinese.

go check your xiaomi phone, maybe it is an "adapted" version for african consumers. at least , i know the xiaomi in india is not the xiaomi in china.

look at your Viju milk . that is one of the growing business from chinese investors in africa. but, viju milk , as well as Tecno phones, are too low quality, for chinese consumers. they can not survive in china.

in the future, as the container shipment between china and africa be more mature, and the education level of local african improves, africa will be another competitor with india. made-in-india or africa, and sold to china and West.

Nice write up.

The Chinese started from somewhere aka the bottom. They did not fly to the top.

They started in a disadvantaged position, then grew to where they are today.

Nigeria can follow that part, India can follow that part if we make manufacturing a community/national business and not just an individual business.

Nigerian products are very expensive because the manufactures are exploiting Nigerians.

Remember a Service provider in Nigeria once sold sim cards for 30k Naira.

Its the nauture of business men to set high markup in Nigeria. Its justa thing of greed and explotation.
