New press reports claim that the Minister of Transportation in Nigeria, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has suggested tougher punishments to be imposed on crimes relating to railway vandalism in Nigeria. He reportedly recommended that anyone found guilty of railway vandalism in Nigeria should be charged with “manslaughter” and given the corresponding punishment provided in the law.

Nigeria’s Transport Minister, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has recommended that railway vandals should be punished for “manslaughter”

This shocking proposal was said to have been submitted by Mr Rotimi Amaechi during a recent Ministerial press briefing that was held at the Aso Rock by the Presidential Communications Team. Mr Amaechi stressed that railway vandals have been on a rampage in recent times and thus, the Nigerian government needs to handle their case with tougher measures.

The Minister further explained that railway vandals are becoming a menace as they keep sabotaging rail projects that actually cost the nation huge sums of money to construct. He further stressed that vandalized rail lines can easily cause derailment accidents that can claim the lives of many train passengers. This is the reason why he recommends that railway vandalism should be treated with strict penalties because it is a “deadly” crime.

It should be noted that Nigeria is currently experiencing a rising spate of railway vandalism reports. As of last month, a gang of six men were reportedly arrested for vandalizing railway tracks in the North-West and North-Central region of the country. These arrested suspects were said to be possessing several truckloads of rail tracks that have been allegedly stolen from various government rail projects in different locations.
