Tecno Phantom X: A Honest Review by atheistandproud(m): 8:58am On Jul 07, 2021
The Tecno Phantom lineup started its life as the flagship line of the Tecno brand. Its latest iteration today is the Tecno Phantom X. The tenth device in the series.

The Phantom line for some reason fell off the radar and was effectively replaced by the Camon line as Tecno’s premium brand. You would have been forgiven if you thought it was discontinued, but the Phantom line is back and back with a bang.

The Phantom X was launched July 2nd 2021, to great fanfare as the company pulled out all stops to ensure that this device made a huge splash in the smartphone market.

But is the Tecno Phantom X worth the hype? Let’s look at the specs to find out.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Tecno Phantom X
---------------------------------------------------------------

Body
-------------
The phone weighs a rather hefty 201g and is sandwiched both at the front and the back by a Gorilla Glass 5. It comes in two color variants: starry night blue and Monet summer.

Display
---------------
The display is a huge curved 6.7″ Super Amoled display with a resolution of 1080p or Full High Definition (FHD+). It has a tall 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a pixel density of 385ppi and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The advertised maximum brightness is 500nits and the screen is protected by a Gorilla Glass 5.

SoC, Software and performance
------------------------------------------------
The MediaTek Helio G95 one of the standout Midrangers in the market and it is very capable. It is an octa core setup with two Cortex A76 CPU cores running at 2.05GHz and six Cortex A55 CPU cores clocked at 2.0GHz. It is built on a 12nm process. The G95 is paired with the Mali G76 MC4 GPU.

The phone runs Android 11 out of the box and has the latest HiOS 7.6 installed.

This phone promises to be a performance beast with scores of 1670 on Geekbench and 309,055 on Antutu benchmarks.

Memory
---------------
The Tecno Phantom X has only one memory variant which is the 8/256GB variant.

Camera
-------------
The phone boasts a Triple camera set-up with a main wide camera, an ultrawide camera and a telephoto camera.

The main camera is a 50MP wide camera. The company has refrained from stating its maker but GSMARENA and Kimovil say that it is a Samsung GN1 camera. Although Kimovil also called the Telephoto camera a depth sensor (which was wrong by the way). The rest cameras are all generic.

The main wide camera has an aperture of F/1.85, pixel size of 1.2µm and a sensor size of 1/1.31″. All of which are very impressive. The camera is binned and will output 12.5MP photos at a bigger 2.4µm.

The Ultrawide camera has an 8MP resolution, an F/2.2 aperture, 1.12µm pixel size and sensor size of 1/1.4″. The Telephoto camera has 13MP resolution with an aperture of F/2.4, 50mm lens and is capable of 2x optical zoom.

The rear cameras are capable of shooting 4K video at 60/30FPS and 1080p video at 30fps as well as slow motion videos at 240fps.

This device sports a dual set-up (48MP + 8MP) for selfies and on paper, they look impressive. The 48MP is the main selfie while the 8MP is an Ultrawide snapper. The selfie records 1080p video at 30fps.

Battery
--------------
The battery has a capacity of 4700mAh and it supports 33W fast charging. Tecno says that it can charge up to 70% in 30 minutes. There is also a 33W capable fast charger in the box to help you take advantage of the phone’s fast charging capabilities.

Connectivity/sensors
--------------------------------
This device is 4G LTE enabled and does not have 5G connectivity. It supports LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28 (a & b), 38, 40 and 41. It also supports Bluetooth 5 and Wi-Fi 5 out of the box.

There is no Infrared blaster or NFC on this phone. The USB port is a type C 2.0 port. The fingerprint is an under-display optical fingerprint sensor. There is also a proximity sensor, accelerometer, GPS and of course, a gyroscope.

Price and availability
--------------------------------
The Tecno Phantom X sells for a whopping ₦228,000.00.

Conclusion
-------------------
The Tecno Phantom X is a very decent phone for the specs alone. It can comfortably trade blows with devices from Xiaomi, Samsung and Oppo within the Midrange class but that’s as good as it gets.

The review from GSMARENA shows that the cameras are below par with the exception of the night and selfie modes. The charging speed is slower than advertised and the display is no brighter than 450nits which for an AMOLED display is very poor.

Finally we have the price. It is way overpriced for a midrange. For ₦228,000 you could buy a Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi Note 10 5G, Redmi Note 10S, Vivo V21 and V21e, Tecno Camon 17 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 amongst others. These are phones that are can comfortably take on and beat the Tecno Phantom X. For that price, it is a no for me.

In a way...

But apart from the cameras and curved body, this is essentially a copy paste of the Tecno Camon 17 Pro.

it has super Amoled screen too, I'm not sure Camon 17pro has that. How then is it a copy and paste?

Read my post, read your comment.

I've already said that the curved body and cameras are not the same. The storage is the same eMMC 5.1/UFS2.1 8/256GB storage as seen on the Camon17 pro.

What's your point then?

The chipset is the heart and brain of a device, the most important component, then followed by cameras, screen, etc.

Honestly tecno tried on this device, but the following are what made it a miss.
1. The price
2. The malware, buggy, ads infested launcher called Hios..
3. Who use's Ella when Google assistant is available, even siri they learn work.
4. The chipset

Yeah you're right about the screen.

But the phantom has a lot of the Camon 17 pro internals

Same SoC, same GPU, same main selfie, same refresh rate, same 4k video resolution, same storage.

The Phantom does not stand out in a class of it's own away from the Camon 17 Pro.

If Xiaomi and Vivo can use Mediatek Dimensity 700 and 800U and sell them for less than 200k. I see no reason why Tecno are using the G95 and pricing it at that amount.

At this point, I'll pick the Camon 17 Pro over the Phantom.

Ella is well...a work in progress. They'll get there hopefully.

The launcher seems to be much smoother but there's still the ad problem.

The chipset is a let down for that price. G95 is great but it's not worth 200k

The price is the main issue here. Without the price, a lot of reviews would have good things to say about this phone.

Watch the review of phantom x on gsm arena, where the reviewer's said 'Ella was finding it difficult to recognise word'. Trassion is not a software company but a hardware company. This is the reason why the best experience on android is gotten from the Google pixel, since android is own by Google

The price was the biggest let down, though they also missed on some other things too. Example the chipset for over 200k they could have used a more better chipset. The amoled screen they used is probably the cheapest type of amoled they could find. It looks good cos it's Amoled but it also doesn't justify spending over 200k on it. The price is a major factor here.

If they had left it at 150k max, it could have been a perfect midrange but Tecno is Tecno. If they do a proper flagship I'm sure it the price will be one million naira grin grin

I've seen the review.

Obviously Ella is nothing to write home about. They're not even a hardware company. Who dash them? Not to talk of software.

But we all have to start from somewhere. That's my point. If they choose to follow up the Ella, they could get somewhere. But las las knowing Tecno, we may never see Ella again.

It's your word against GSMARENA.

Tecno are not giving out review samples lol so I'll have to get the phone some way to test it.

That there is fallacious. In 2018, August, Tecno removed fonts from the Pouvoir 2 and Pouvoir 2 pro. I and some others wrote countless mails but they didn't add it back till about a year ago.

Why? To get people to buy the latest phone that was out at the time.

Companies only care about their profit margins. Don't even kid yourself about it. Does 228k sound like a customer friendly margin to you?

If I understand you, you are asking how important chipsets are. The chipsets is what empowers the components of the phone, it's connected to your Camera, battery, Ram, etc. It is basically what allows your smartphone work efficiently.
If you are paying more for a less powerful chipset, then you are being cheated. The phone producer is ripping you off in a crazy way.

There has to be a value for money when you are buying any product be it cars, Phones, houses basically anything.
