Because CNBC said it doesn't mean its gospel, this article says the average staring salary for graduates is $50k.

https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/pay-salary/average-salary-for-college-graduates

So this $50k and saving depends on a lot of things, a young single person can save on that money, if that is the income for a married couple with kids then yes it will be very very hard though the household income should be higher if both are working.

Location also matters, there are places in Texas you can buy a fairly big house and pay mortgage of $600 a month. Many cities outside London are significantly lower cost as well so using a generic $50k for all of the US and Europe makes no sense.

dake40:

The OP made concrete analysis and even quoted CNBC, so you sabi pass CNBC?

$50k isn't always the take home, you pay tax which atimes could be over $8k depending on the location, putting other expenses into considerations, saving $9k might be hellish

Thank you. The bolded is the key.

Well, I know for a fact, that if you live in Texas, earn $50k (gross income not take home pay), live a life that is not extravagant (I don't mean suffer yourself), you will save much more more than 9k and live better quality life than most people living in Nigeria.

Not multiple job.... single job. E.g .... a blue collar worker... $25 /hr.. 40 hrs per week.... $1000/wk... $4000/mth. White collar worker (most likely supervisor+)... $4000/mth. Same pay. The blue collar is likely to make overtime .... each hour O/T he is paid at a rate of $37.50 /he. If he makes just 5 hours OT per week (and this is soooo common).. . that's a boost of $185/week..... $740/month... x12 ... you have a calculator?? .. and we wonder why so often blue collar workers make more than their supervisors.

U did not minus feeding money... House rent.. bills..

$4000/ month... He might just end up saving $2000 per month or #1500.

Other bills will come too.

Where do i start as it is clear op is intent on misleading people with easily debunkable claims. Firstly, it is very possible even for one doing menial jobs in good economies to save that amount daily(of course, a bit discomforting but doable), let alone professionals with good jobs, to argue this is ignorance on your part. Secondly, considering the fact nearly 2/3 of Nigeria labour force are in the informal sector, very few make 10k a day which could translate to nearly 260k monthly(going by stats, nearly 90% of Nigeria's labour force dont make that amount in a month). Just for the record, nearly 45% of Nigeria population live below $1.9 per day.so your claim is completely false. Thirdly, you seem to be oblivious of the real reason people are leaving in droves. A safe, prosperous and working system is simply what immigrants are after, which there own country deprived them. Moreover, most people immigrate to experience a good standard of living which seems to be out of reach for the average Nigerian.

$1.9 dollar a day? That's like 800naira. You know that can't be true. Even if you eat garri and groundnut thrice in a day it will cost you close to 800naira for a single person. What about other bills?

Alot of people earn 28k monthly, some earn far less than that especially in the north. i'm not suprised you are oblivious of this fact. You probably belong to the fortunate 1% who are mostly out of touch with the realities of the average Nigerian. Belive it or not, Nigerians are getting poorer and things are unlikely to get better anytime soon, meanwhile the elites are rolling in riches and dont give two whoops in hades about the plight of the average Nigerian.

I did my calculation thoroughly before posting. In Europe or North America someone who earns $50,000 will be left with $$37,000 to spend after tax. A standard one bedroom goes for $14,400 a year. When other bills are factored in I believe you will agree with me that it becomes impossible to save $9,000 a year. That was why I included a video below my post for a breakdown of cost of living
If you live in the cheaper southern states then its comfortable possible to save that $9000 or more a year. All bills and normal living expenses factored in.

saving $9000 on that salary is not difficult. Lets do the calculation in 4 major states where Nigerians are domiciled.

California
Net income $39500
Studio apartment 1300*12=$15600
Utilities $2400/year
Feeding $3600/year
Other expenses(insurance and toiletries) 4800/year
Savings $12900

New York
Net income $39500
Studio apartment $1600*12=$19600
Utilities and feeding $6000/year
Other expenses $4800/year
Savings $9500

Texas
Net income $41200
Studio apartment 1000*12=$12000
Utilities and feeding $6000/year
Other expences $4800/year
Savings $18400

Georgia
Net income $39150
Studio apartment $900*12= $10800
Utilities and feeding $6000/year
Other expences $4800/year
Savings $19550

Note: this is a rough estimate some of these figures are overblown, except the net income.

Now lets take look at Nigeria states with an annual income of #3million.

Lagos
Studio apartment #400k(closer to work)
Feeding #300k
Utilizes #240k(fueling of generator, Internet, cable)
Expenses #180k
Savings 1.88milion less than $5k

Abuja
Studio apartment #450k
Feeding #300k
Utilities #240k
Expenses #180k
Savings 1.83milion less than $5k

Enugu
Studio apartment #200k
Feeding #300k
Utilities #240k
Expenses 180k
Savings 2.08million less than $6k

Portharcout
Studio apartment #250k
Feeding #300k
Utilities #240k
Expences #180k
Savings 2.03 million less than $6k

Note: it is only about 5% of the populace that earns this amount legally.

your other expenses won't cover car notes, car insurance, health insurance, gas for your car, cable, clothes and shoes, car repairs, phone bills, haircut. Other expenses should be at least 10,000 which is just $30 daily. In Nigeria 80% of businesses make 10k profit daily. I think 35% of Nigerians make over 3million naira annually

I took it personal because in my younger days .I didn’t have access to internet like today’s youths do and I was subject to a lot of false information like this about overseas that when I traveled at an older age I saw myself doing things I could have done 15-20 years ago .The truth: You don’t need to go and live in a big city you heard in the movies as many Nigerians are misled to believe when emigrating.Minimum wage jobs are around $15 now and in my small town 2 bedroom monthly rent apartment is like $600 monthly or you apply for low income housing for less than $300 in many cases .working the minimum standard work week your check should be like $500-$600 weekly after tax.Thats like $2,000-$2400 monthly and with that income you are qualified for food stamps and there are foods banks so after rents, utilities, insurance etc you are saving up a minimum of $1,500 monthly. So that’s like $16k a year and if you are prudent and focused with your life without any student loans or women drama or partying and you came in your twenties after ten 10 years you are good to go back home, invest, start a business and retire early .I wish I had information back then or access to internet like today’s youths do because I had no helper and basically struggled through life doing everything by myself.Dont mislead people please

No I am not counting gee boys or office runs. Majority of businesses make over 20k daily on the average. I hope you know the cost of living these days is on the high side. 3million is nothing for a single person annually. How much do you think a family of 5 spend on running their generator annually? I am not including the cost of fueling two cars (one for husband and one for wife). I believe up to 40% of Nigerians make that much but it is not fixed. Someone can be earning 30k monthly and won't even tough his salary for a full here. Common man, even 1500naira won't be enough for a laborer to eat and transport for a day

You're seriously deluded, apathetic and unable to reason if you think 40% of Nigerians make over 20k, or even 10k, per day. Do you realize that there are over 200 million people living in Nigeria and more than half of those are below the poverty line or vulnerable to poverty? Do you know what the poverty line in Nigeria is, according to the NBS? It is a freaking 137,000 naira per annum. That is less than 400 naira per day! If majority of Nigerians earn 400 naira per day, it is the height of delusion to suggest that 40% of Nigerians earn 20k per day. From analysis of available stats, I can reasonably conclude that less than 5% of Nigerians earn that amount.

The fact that you're well off and surrounded by other people who are well off (a drop in the ocean considering the overall population) does not mean that the vast majority of Nigerians have similar circumstances. You need to be empathetic, bro, and realize that all fingers are not equal. Even the eye test supports the rate of poverty in Nigeria. You should leave your privileged bubble, travel more and rationally observe the level of squalor being suffered by the majority of Nigerians.

You, and everyone else who is comfortable with the state of the country, has every right to remain in Nigeria if you please, but coming on a public forum to spout such nonsense in a bid to discourage other people from striving to improve their conditions by migrating out of the country is not right at all.

You can support your arguments against immigration with real facts and truthful opinions, and there are a few reasons why you shouldn't necessarily immigrate out of Nigeria i.e. if you're reasonably well off in Nigeria, you're happy with the living conditions in Nigeria and your circumstances are likely not to significantly improve by immigrating out of the country, then by all means stay back. But trying to discourage other people who don't have similar circumstances (the vast majority of the population) from immigrating is honestly evil.

Mind you! There are mere assumptions, no logical facts and please don't tag me with that CNSN or whatever it is.

You can't generalize how much they earn, their needs or priority. You don't expect a single person and a family man to have the same need. Yet you beautifully conjured a fake analysis to convince the gullible ones like yourself a reason to stay back!

Let's go a bit back to your beautiful nonsense of Nigerians earning more than 10k a day,
Okay... assuming it to be true, you are aware of the country's currency which keeps depreciating, let's not forget location is another problem.
Meaning, even if you earn 100k a day, by the time you calculate feeding expenses, transport and certain needs, you end up with very little or nothing

Let's not forget about our beloved country's security,
Bandits, terrorist groups, kidnappers and the continuous increase in the price of things are the daily headlines

Lastly, are you aware that merely being in Nigeria is a barrier to a lot of opportunities one might have? I had some online jobs few months ago but they refused me because of my location, believing we're all fraudsters.

Now what bullshit were you spilling about staying back?

Besides spending and saving are two different things. Just because you spend 30k a day doesn't necessarily mean you are doing fine financially. The price of things are so expensive that when you go to the market with 6k, you end up calculating thrice to be sure how your money was spent.
I feel like I'm talking to a naive child who just experience the world in One day, just to generalize the situation of the people.

I used garri as an example because even a church rat can afford it. I am not gullible. Imagine someone saying 50% of Nigerians earn 137,000 per annum. Even in the worst cities that won't cover your rent for a two bedroom house for a year. Let's be realistic. Feeding alone for an individual cost over 300k in a year.

I want to see where you are going with your point on feeding. I already stated earlier spending is different from saving.

I disagree with this. $19,000 saved, nah nigga
Davidganna10:
saving $9000 on that salary is not difficult. Lets do the calculation in 4 major states where Nigerians are domiciled.

California
Net income $39500
Studio apartment 1300*12=$15600
Utilities $2400/year
Feeding $3600/year
Other expenses(insurance and toiletries) 4800/year
Savings $12900

New York
Net income $39500
Studio apartment $1600*12=$19600
Utilities and feeding $6000/year
Other expenses $4800/year
Savings $9500

Texas
Net income $41200
Studio apartment 1000*12=$12000
Utilities and feeding $6000/year
Other expences $4800/year
Savings $18400

Georgia
Net income $39150
Studio apartment $900*12= $10800
Utilities and feeding $6000/year
Other expences $4800/year
Savings $19550

Note: this is a rough estimate some of these figures are overblown, except the net income.

Now lets take look at Nigeria states with an annual income of #3million.

Lagos
Studio apartment #400k(closer to work)
Feeding #300k
Utilizes #240k(fueling of generator, Internet, cable)
Expenses #180k
Savings 1.88milion less than $5k

Abuja
Studio apartment #450k
Feeding #300k
Utilities #240k
Expenses #180k
Savings 1.83milion less than $5k

Enugu
Studio apartment #200k
Feeding #300k
Utilities #240k
Expenses 180k
Savings 2.08million less than $6k

Portharcout
Studio apartment #250k
Feeding #300k
Utilities #240k
Expences #180k
Savings 2.03 million less than $6k

Note: it is only about 5% of the populace that earns this amount legally.

Thats true
Its very easy to be in a bubble in one corner in Lagos
And be oblivious to the sufferings of the vast majority

And that is why when you disagree to something stated, you give a reason or logical facts why you disagreed.

On typing *I disagree* and walk away
