otokx: No money. That's the problem No money for facilities, expertise, food, competitions, raising the next generation of talent. China is on top of the medals table. They spent 6.7 billion dollars on sports in 2019. In 2020, Nigeria budgeted $200 million for sports. Many African countries are in the same boat...even the successful ones 3 Likes |

do4luv14: No, only the 1st and 2nd winners qualify automatically. Then they pick two 3rd-placed runners based on their highest finishing time. For instance; Oduduru stopped at 20.16s and was placed on the pending qualification list. Unfortunately, another 3rd placed runner finished ahead of him at 19.98s. As a result, the faster runner (19.98) took Divine's place and qualified. Hope this helps. 3 Likes |

Im not clear about the namibian Christine mboma gender status. Is she a case of another cestar samanya or its just naturally high testosterone level in her blood. |

WarriAproko: Long answer....Semenya and Hubbard are different Semenya was born intersex (hermaphrodite...to use layman term), but has 'womanly parts' outwardly...but she does secrete more testosterone than the average woman.(but not as high as a male). Da rules state that as a female your testosterone must be below a certain level(all ladies produce some testosterone...in rather tiny amounts compared to males)...and to be honest, Semenya did try to keep her testosterone down for some time via medication, but it made her feel ill and hampered her performance. Eventually she went to court, and lost. (The funny thing is that the rules on testosterone for women apply for the 800m and the 1500m. Not for shorter or longer distances, which is why a Nigerien, and Namibian woman in the same boat with Sememya took part in the Olympics by switching to the 100m and 200m...Namibian won silver in the 200m. Semenya too tried to qualify for the 5000m which has no restrictions...and failed). As for Hubbard 1.She is a weightlifter...different sport, different rules 2.Her testosterone levels are within the limit so to speak (being a trans woman, who has undergone treatment to make sure that happens) 3.Even then, she lost. (Her first attempt at the weights ended in failure. Too much pressure). 4.And even then, there is research that shows that trans women athletes may still have a physiologic advantage over cis women athletes...so the rules may still change. Different strokes for different folks, but in a very complicated way. Here is a more detailed look 1.Why is CASTER semenya not at the olympics 2.Why Laurel Hubbard can compete at the Tokyo Olympics when Caster Semenya can't Modified Most female athletes have found both Semenya and Hubbard's presence in their respective sports problematic. And indeed, in the good dold days, testosterone used to be a common doping agent.(East Germany used the hormone on their women athletes well well in the 1970's...with sometimes tragic results long term. One female shotputter had to undergo a sex change operation to become a man, not because she was trans in orientation, but because she had been pumped up with so much testosterone that she was basically growing a beard and all that. Another needed specialist treatment to enable her have children) 4 Likes |

I just observed that some sporting events like weightlifting and boxing produce two bronze medalists for each category of the sports. Why is this so? |

The Nigerian gold medal hopefull in the 53kg category of the freestyle wrestling event in the ongoing olympics, Adekuraonye Odunayo, was shockingly defeated by her Mongolan opponent. Surprisingly, she was 8-0 up before she was pinfalled by her opponent. 1 Like |
