The minister says the company will function to capacity before the end of President Buhari's tenure, and produce LIQUID STEEL for building aircraft and motor engines and parts.

Olamilekan Adegbite, the minister of Mines and Steel Development, says Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited will function to capacity before the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Mr Adegbite made this known during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.

He said the federal government had made effort to ensure that the Russian company that built the steel industry would come to Nigeria to conduct technical audit of the company.....

NAN recalls that the minister had earlier said that a 60-man team from Russia would arrive in Nigeria to start technical audit of Ajaokuta steel.

The agreement on how to revive the steel company was reached during a meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and President Vladimir Putin in Russia in 2019.

The Russian government had nominated TPE, the original builder of Ajaokuta Steel Company, to conduct technical audit of the steel company to ascertain the level of work remaining to be completed on the steel company.

However, the minister said the main purpose of the steel company when it was conceived and built was to produce liquid steel, adding that the National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) was set up at Itakpe in Kogi to feed it with iron ore.

He explained that liquid steel could be used for building aeroplane and car engine parts, among others.

“Ajaokuta Steel Company has not been able to produce liquid steel since it was built – the little hurdles we need to address.''

“The steel company has worked in the past whereby billet were imported to produce reinforcement but that was not what Ajaokuta steel was built for,” he said.

He also said the ministry had recently trained some youths in the metal sub-sector on national development to ensure human capital development with special emphasis on vibrant metals operators.

He said the workshop was an appropriate strategy meant to launch and mainstream youths into the sector, adding that the three weeks intensive workshop was to work towards the development of the sector.

Though they were called white elephant projects then due to allegations of corruption,but I still wonder till date why he and his partner,not minding the billions of dollars invested,did not adopt a different measure instead of cancelling this laudable project and others that were almost nearing completion.

''Currently, Nigeria has three functional satellites that are orbiting the earth, delivering important data and driving social-economic development across various sectors of the country’s economy.

From an analysis, technology companies in Nigeria are doing a lot, varying from backend programming to payment platforms, software development, robotics, internet of things, artificial intelligence and many more, which were spinoffs of space exploration and commercial markets.

However, the National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, given the mandate to oversee space activities in Nigeria, dominates satellite launches in Africa with ten satellite launches, space policies and operations among others, and operates through various sub-centres and laboratories around the country.

NASRDA is the principal space intelligence team collaborating with both the Nigerian military and foreign military aid agencies working to eliminate Boko Haram insurgents in West Africa.

The agency had produced a 10-metre digital elevation simulation map and vegetation density map of Sambisa Forest, using NigeriaSat-X to assist the Nigerian military in combating the dreaded Boko Haram sect, who at some point, overran several towns in North-Eastern Nigeria.

Meanwhile, in external military operations, NASRDA produced data and satellite images of South-West Mali during the civil war between Southern and Northern Mali in 2012. The topographic map provided the West African peace-keeping soldiers with geographical knowledge of the crisis zone.

Ultimately, the satellite images contributed to successful military intervention in Mali. NASRDA also conducted image mapping and terrain analysis of the Dargol Area of Niger Republic, the scene of the 2013 Nigerian Airforce jet crash.

According to data obtained by The Guardian, the space agency donated over 4000 satellite images estimated to be worth N3 billion ($8.3 million), to Nigerian universities and research institutions, using NigeriaSat-1 alone. In all, NigeriaSat-1 directly contributed over N10.5 billion ($29 million) to Nigeria’s economy within its first nine years in orbit.

With the launch of NigeriaSat-2 and X in August 2011, NASRDA commenced the second phase of resource inventory mapping for the government, and completed a detailed resource inventory mapping in South-West and North-Central Nigeria excluding Benue State, at a scale of 1:50,000, which was estimated to be worth about N5 billion ($13.8 million) upon completion.

The other part of Nigeria’s earth observation satellite programme by the agency involved supporting universities and research institutions with free data for academic research. NASRDA was said to have donated about N4.5 billion ($12.4 million) worth of images from NigeriaSat-X to 35 Nigerian universities.''

Did you inspect the equipment?

What do you know about steel industry equipment and facilities?

It's a very huge complex that takes several hours to explore, so maybe you stopped at the gate or entered one or two rooms for all we know, and then came here to type your negative crap.

You cannot decide by mere layman observation, if an enormous facility of that cost and size ought to be scrapped, without a technical assessment by qualified personnel.

You're not a steel plant expert, so kindly limit your advice to what you actually know.

The plant is NOT 'outdated' and was reportedly built to last over 100 years.

The technical audit will determine the scope of work that may be required to bring the 97% completed plant to full functionality.

All the negative things people say about Buhari I take it with a pinch of salt. I am not talking politics here because I am not that interested in democracy for any developing nation. But Cancellation of ajaokita steel rolling mills and Iwopin paper mills is the reason I don't fancy him as an head of state and unbelievable to me that he came back as a president
