Twenty-five per cent of vehicles in
Abu Dhabi will be running on
clean and cheaper compressed
natural gas (CNG) and green diesel as
alternative fuels by 2012. According
to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi
(EAD), which is responsible to implement
the project, 17 CNG filling stations are
already operational and more are being
installed to help achieve the target on
time. The CNG fuel will be available at
these stations for Dh1.28 per kilogram.
A spokesperson from EAD, who dubbed
CNG as “Clean Natural Gas“, said 11
of the 17 stations are operational in Abu
Dhabi city, two in Al Ain and four in
Sharjah. All of them have been installed
at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company
for Distribution (ADNOC Distribution)
filling stations.
The strategy for cleaner fuel was proposed
and launched in early 2000 with an
initial plan to convert all government
vehicles to run on CNG. The overall
strategy includes converting all taxis
in the emirate to run on CNG and all
government buses and heavy vehicles on
ultra low sulfur diesel which is dubbed as
Green Diesel.
In 2005, the Abu Dhabi Executive
Council formed a technical committee
headed by EAD to implement the
project — installation of CNG and
Green Diesel filling stations and helping
to convert vehicles for the alternative
fuels at workshops being developed in
Sharjah and Abu Dhabi emirates.

The project is a strategic step that supports the natural gas
industry in the emirate, improves its air quality for a cleaner
