NIPR Fumes Over Appointment Of New Military Spokesperson, General Sawyer by valentineuwakwe(m): 10:47pm On Jul 30, 2021
The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has expressed anger over the appointment of Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyer as the new military spokesperson.

Sawyer resumed at the Defence Headquarters on Friday as the Director of Defence Information (DDI).

The NIPR lamented that the Armed Forces disregarded the statutory provisions on the appointment, noting that only professionals should hold such positions whether in public or private organisations.

A council member, who pleaded anonymity, said the institute would meet and consider action to be taken.

“We have sent out several correspondences to public and private organisations on the legal implications of such appointments which are against the law”, the senior Fellow told PRNigeria.

He regretted that this would be the third time the DHQ would flout the requirement by appointing non-certified persons to the position.

“For Heads for Account, Legal, Engineering and Medical Departments, for instance, they assign qualified and certified accountants, lawyers, engineers and doctors.

“Why should they treat the Information/Public Relations Department differently? This deliberate policy of embarrassing a professional body for image-maker and crisis communicators is very unfair and unfortunate.”

The NIPR official said there are set parameters of knowledge that must be acquired before anyone can practice public relations.

He stressed that the law establishing the NIPR makes it a criminal offence for anybody to practice PR in Nigeria without a license.

The law, according to the Fellow, provides imprisonment, fine, or both for offenders.

Army and defense spokesmen are southerners that will be mitigating the damage control for all their atrocities. While the choice military appointments are exclusive for the northerners.
