A referendum is necessary to establish the true will of the people and give legitimacy to subsequent actions.

Scotland had a referendum and the true will of the people emerged. Nigeria should not be afraid to have a referendum of its people.

Having it around December will allow for a time when people naturally go back home or we allow people to indicate their tribal/ancestral village/local government

Referendum is not done by the nation rather under strict supervision of UN

The secessionists in Nigeria have only been wasting their time cos they are doing the wrong thing.

If there is no secession clause in Nigeria constitution, under which law are they going to grant a referendum?

Shouldn't the secession clause be the first priority of the agitators in Nigeria?

Says who? UN does not have any authority over a sovereign nation. They can only mediate when they are invited and cannot impose anything on the democratic government in power.

Do you know Nigeria has done two referendum in the past? A plebiscite(referendum) to allow some part of Nigeria join Cameroon and a referendum to create Midwest state.

Secession is different from referendum.
You can do referendum for anything. For instance if Nigeria wants to go back to parliamentary system of govt a referendum
is needed.

When the oppressor hear or See's the truth, they will always look for how to divert it, until they are swallowed and disgraced, Nigeria should for once be truthful to its self for once.

Does the Nigerian Constitution allow secession?

In-Brief

Under the Nigerian Constitution, no part of Nigeria has the power to form its own independent government or secede from the country. In fact, the word 'secede' does not appear in the Constitution.

Dig Deeper

The nearest answer to this is found in Article 2 of the constitution, which states that Nigeria is one indivisible and indissoluble sovereign state to be known by the name of the 'Federal Republic of Nigeria'. This means the only way to legally grant such an option is through an amendment to the law.

While there have been calls for a referendum, the constitution of Nigeria only addresses two scenarios where a referendum is recognised – state boundary adjustment and the recall of a member of the National Assembly.

Context

The only territory to 'leave' Nigeria, remains the Bakassi peninsula. This was a result of a territorial disagreement between Nigeria and Cameroon and was decided by the International Court of Justice in 2006. However, the origin of the dispute came from pre-independence deliberations. Thus, it did not fall under the constitution that does not permit secession.

The only real attempt to secede was the Nigerian Civil War from 1967-1970. This was a result of a declaration of an independent state by the late Odumegwu Ojukwu. Recently, the Biafra agitation has been brought back to the fore. Some Northern Youths’ in Kaduna demanded that Igbos leave Northern territory by October 1, 2017, and Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) stated that an elections will not take place in the East without the promise of a referendum on Biafra.

Under what law did the UK have its own and who conducted it. Adults need to learn not to ask obvious questions.

There is a reason why countries have law makers and voting are organised in a country by designated bodies why creat problems where non exist.

Ones vote is a private and personal matter so a open ballot is out of the question by who and for whose benefit.

It really is a national issue not village matter

If you are an adult, you would know that each sovereign country has their style of government and laws. The UK is a parliamentary monarchy while Nigeria is a federal republic. Also the UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; while Nigerian is one indivisible country. You see the difference?

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own parliaments as part of the United Kingdom. And the referendum Scotland had was to exit the United Kingdom.
