Barcelona Reportedly Still Owe Leo Messi €39million by ekeday(m): 3:05pm On Aug 14, 2021 |
Cash-strapped FC Barcelona reportedly still owe Lionel Messi €39 million (R679 million) despite the Argentine's transfer to Paris Saint-Germain being made official this week. On Tuesday, the Ligue 1 club confirmed that they had secured Messi's signature after his move to rejoin the Catalan giants fell apart due to "financial obstacles". Barca president Joan Laporta later confirmed that the LaLiga side is set to post stunning losses of €487 million (R8.4 billion) for last season. Now, according to Spanish outlet El Espanol h/t BeSoccer, the Spanish club's financial woes could worsen after it became apparent that the Argentine is still owed €39 million (R679 million) as part of a loyalty bonus clause. The full clause payment was said to be valued at €78 million (R1.3 billion), and with his contract having ended without him asking to leave or submitting a transfer request, Messi is still due some of this money. The Blaugrana reportedly made the decision to pay it in two stages, and already paid the first half of it in June 2020, but still have the second payment outstanding. It remains unknown whether or not the 34-year-old is demanding the money as he has just signed a lucrative contract worth a reported €35 million (R610 million) a year with PSG, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
