There has always been debates as regards the best Federal Medical Schools in Nigeria and this list of mine (independent research) attempts to put this debates to rest.

The standards on which this judgement was made (are not and should not be used as the ultimate yardstick) are the following:
1. Number of Fellows/Consultants of the West African College of Surgeons
2. PubMed: a free search engine accessing primarily the MEDLINE database of references and abstracts on life sciences and biomedical topics.
3. MDCN Quota for Medicine
4. Number of Bed Spaces available at each Teaching Hospital.

Each of these Criteria carries 5 points making a total of 20 points.

Now to the list.

1. University College Hospital, Ibadan, 20 points:
University College Hospital, Ibadan is a federal teaching hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria attached to the University of Ibadan.

- Number of Beds: 850

2. University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin-City, 15 Points:
University of Benin Teaching Hospital is a premier and multi-specialty healthcare service provider in West Africa. The hospital is located in Ugbowo, Benin City and got established on May 12, 1973 following the enactment of an edict of the Nigeria National Health Act.

3. Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos 14 Points:
Lagos University Teaching Hospital is a tertiary hospital established in 1961 and is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria. The teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Lagos College of Medicine established in 1962.

4.Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, 13 Points:
The Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) is located in a town known as Shika along Zaria-Sokoto road in Zaria, Kaduna. It is a tertiary and a referral hospital where cases beyond the primary and secondary health facilities are being referred for proper management

4. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, 13 Points:
The Hospital was launched early in the 20th century as a standard healthcare centre for Africans. It later metamorphosed into a General Hospital in 1960 and a Specialist Hospital in 1970. Today, the bed capacity of the hospital is over 500 beds and the number of its personnel has increased tremendously.

5. Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, 11 Points:
University Of Jos Teaching Hospital was established in 1981. This is a tertiary health facility affiliated with University of Jos, that provides secondary and tertiary medical care, and is also involved in the training of high and middle level manpower for the health industry.

6. University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, 10 Points:
University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital originally commenced its operations in 1980 and was officially commissioned by the federal government in 1985. When it started out, there were 60 beds mainly in use. After relocating to its permanent site in 2006, the hospital's capacity was expanded to 782 beds.

Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is a Federal Government Teaching Hospital located in Kano State, Nigeria. It was formerly known as Bayero University Teaching hospital. It is used for the training of Bayero University medical students and postgraduate medical doctors (Residency training).

8. Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, 8 Points:
The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex is one of first generation of Teaching Hospitals established by the Federal Government to providequalitative health care delivery to its people.

In 1967, the defunct Western State Government of Nigeria resolved to establish a medical school in its state university at Ile-Ife (which was then five (5) years old to provide manpower to tackle the health problem of the state. After a period of careful planning Faculty of Health Science was created in the then University of Ife (now OAU) on 8th May, 1972.

The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) was officially commissioned on the 23rd of July, 1983 by former President Aliyu Shehu Shagari, GCFR. The hospital now has total bed capacity of 600 with 17 clinical and 14 non clinical department;serving a population of over 25 million in the North East Geopolitical Zone,Comprising Six state namely, Borno, Yobe,Adamawa,Taraba, Bauchi,and Gombe;as well as a sizable number across the border of the Cameron,Niger and Chad Republic.

9. University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo, 6 Points:
University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) is a tertiary hospital in Abak road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, an administrative division of Nigeria. The hospital was established in 1999 as Federal Medical Centre but was upgraded to University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in 2008. It is affiliated with University of Uyo College of Medicine.

9. Usman Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, 6 Points:
The history of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital dates back to 1972/3 financial Year when the then Federal Military Government authorized the release of N1m each to 12 States of the Federation for the development of Specialist Hospitals with teaching facilities. It is among the crop of Teaching Hospitals that were later established by decrees in May 1980 as second generation Teaching Hospitals along with Calabar, Port-Harcourt, Ilorin, Maiduguri and Jos. Seventeen Years after, precisely in 1989, the project was completed and commissioned by the then Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
