A civil engineer, Kassim Lawani, has accused the management of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, of lying about the circumstances surrounding the death of his 19-year-old daughter, Precious.

gathered that Precious was admitted for a Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board programme in the institution.

Barely a month after her resumption of studies, Kassim said the varsity chaplain, one Dr Larry, led a delegation to his house in the Rumukwurushi area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to break the news of his daughter’s death to him.

According to him, the delegates claimed that Precious died shortly after she was found convulsing in the hostel due to an illness that prevented her from leading prayers during the morning devotion.

He also stated that the delegates indicated the varsity’s readiness to take care of her burial expenses.

Our correspondent learnt that the family agreed with the proposed burial arrangement, but demanded an autopsy to ascertain the cause of the teenager’s death.

Her father said the matter took another turn when the family visited the school.

“While our relatives were talking to some of my daughter’s colleagues who witnessed the incident, they said Precious actually led the prayer on the fateful day, and that while all of them closed their eyes in prayers, they heard a loud bang.

“As they quickly opened their eyes, they discovered that Precious had fallen some meters below a narrow corridor in front of the hostel, where the prayer session was being held.

“As the students rushed down to see what might have happened, they discovered that she had a cracked skull; she was eventually taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” he added.

An autopsy report obtained by revealed that the victim died from “intracranial haemorrhage, skull fracture, blunt force trauma to the head.”

The time and date of death were stated as 7am, December 5, 2020.

Kassim said when the school management was confronted with the report, the family was informed that the varsity had equally conducted an internal investigation.

However, it reportedly refused to share the report of the investigation with the family.

“The school claimed that Precious was found convulsing on the floor of the hostel prior to her death, but she never had any history of convulsion. The school promised to release my daughter’s medical record to the family, but refused to do so till date. What is Bowen University hiding?

“They volunteered to bury her in the school cemetery with all expenses to be taken care of by the school. We were in shock and had no choice, but to agree. We had no reason whatsoever to doubt the school.

“However, the mystery, the disparities, the lies, and the suspected cover-up by the school on the real cause of Precious’ death opened up the real reason for the school’s actions.

“Bowen University never wanted us to discover the real cause of my daughter’s death. It chose not to call us immediately after she died because we would have visited the school and upon discovering her cracked skull would have demanded answers,” an enraged Kassim added.

A spokesman for Bowen University, Toba Adaramola, said the management would react later.

He said, “The situation is regrettable; nobody will ever wish for something like that to happen. Maybe at the appropriate time, the school will react.”

Rip to the dead.

Nigerian parents must ensure puplic universities are functional and world class standard.

They cant be wasting their funds in the so called private uni.

We the blacks love short cut too much.

Parents spending too much on education is one of the hidden reason many Nigerian shave remained very poor for all these decades.

In the developed world only the very rich send their kids to private unis and co, but in Nigeria the very poor and average send their kids to private unis and co with their last card. Not cool.

The religious private unis too dey over do. These students will not be pastors when they grow up. Unis should be ran by real men with exp in life, not religious men.

Nigerian parents dont understand the true meaning of education.

What stop these so-called 'real men with experience in life' from establishing and running their own universities?

And who told you that students don't die in public universities?

Both Bowen University and the Lawani family are correct.

Most likely, Precious had a seizure attack, fell down and sustained a skull fracture with intracranial heamorrhage leading to her untimely death.

Its easier for religious men to raise funds. Religious men are very good when it comes to bring up religious people only. They are not too good when it come to other carers.

It's far easier for these 'real men with experience in life' to raise funds because they understand life better.

Nothing is going to change even if a saint was in charge.

University education is not cheap anywhere. Those who offer it have ways of funding it from the public. The public still bear the burden.

One of the lies said by some persons. Infact your statement is falicious and generalistic.

In the developed world only the very rich send their kids to private unis and co, but in Nigeria the very poor and average send their kids to private unis and co with their last card. Not cool
Another lies that had trended on the internet.
It bit my imagination to see how many countries have you sampled before drawing hasty conclusion.

Uni edu is very cheap in Nigeria.

In the dev world only the very rich send their kid to private sch cos they are exp.

In Nigeria even people who are not having too much money send their kids to private uni and even abroad.

Parents are spending too much to train their kids in Nigeria- Not not too rich parents.

A man working in an office should never pay 800k and above as fees per semester/term for any child.

Nigerian parents dont understand the true meaning of education, I stand to be corrected.

Even you talking may not even know the true meaning of edu.

Its has nothing to do with high fees.

Universities (public) are cheap in Nigeria however their content is obsolete. This does not exonerate private universities either since they still use some obsolete curriculum. However, private universities are opted for because of speed and stableacademic calendar.
You don't expect them to opt in for schools with aforementioned problem. In the so called developed countries which you highlighted, some middle class still opt in for private universities.

It is not good for parents to spend too much on edu. As we have seen its not the last bus stop as the whites made us belief. Edu is deeper than just gooing to school.

Education is the bedrock of the society. The issue with ours is the fact that we are theoretical inclined not problem solvers. We are made to cram and pass hence some Nigerians excel in theory abroad

Most of you arguing bout education don't even know a pinch bout it.
