Fire Force 8.5/10

Written by Atsushi Ohkubo, who's probably one of the best users of symbolism and references in manga, it's about a boy, Shinra Kusakabe, who joins the 8th Company of the Special Fire Force to save people from Spontaneous Human Combustion, a mysterious problem that plagues the people of Tokyo Nation and solve the mystery of his mother and brother's deaths.

Ohkubo takes this simple premise and expands it into a story weaving across religious conspiracies and political cover-ups, roping in many characters into and alongside Shinra's journey. The characters vary from interesting to intriguing to entertaining, in their quirkiness and eccentrics. The story can get heavy from time to time but Ohkubo knows to break the tension with well-timed comedy. He's not perfect at it, though, as some comical scenes have been ill-timed or unnecessary and a certain character's frequent cases of mild nudity has been an issue of controversy and has even turned some people off the show.

Fire Force's fights range from pretty good to awesome. It's an action shounen, after all. Delivered with gorgeous art from the source material and beautiful animation from David Productions, it boasts some of the best fight scenes in recent history.

There's been 2 seasons so far and we're looking forward to a third, both anime-only fans and manga readers alike. And word on the street is that the chapter yet to be adapted blows what we've seen so far out of the water.
