The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has rejected the new Memorandum of Understanding presented by the Federal Government.

The NARD National President, Dr Okhuaihesuyi Uyilawa, said this while addressing newsmen at the end of a closed-door meeting with the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders on Sunday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Nigeria Medical Association led the striking doctors to a meeting summoned at the instance of President Muhammadu Buhari aimed at resolving the ongoing strike by doctors across the country.

NAN recalls that the resident doctors embarked on an indefinite strike on Aug. 1 to press home the issues of agitation amongst their members.

It would also be recalled that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had on Aug. 13, handed over the trade dispute between the federal government and NARD to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria for adjudication.

According to Uyilawa, NARD had refused to sign the MoU that was brokered by its parent body, the NMA, and the Federal Government due to an undisclosed clause.

“We rejected the MoU, we didn’t sign it because we feel we are being punished for the failures of those in government,” he said.

He said the nationwide strike would continue and that they would proceed with the court case.

He, however, added that NARD leadership has to present the new MoU to its members before he could sign the document.

On his part, Ngige said that all other unions in the negotiation including the NMA and the Medical and Dental Consultants of Nigeria have signed the new agreement.

He noted that the meeting did not discuss the issue of ‘No Work No Pay’ but that all parties at the meeting agreed to an out-of-court settlement. (NAN)

Doctors went on strike 3 months ago,for d same reason they have been agitating for since the past 5yrs.
You signed MOU with them but refused to implement it.
They went on another strike to compel you to implement the agreement you had with them.
You want to sign another MOU?
Dear osama buhari and Ngige,do you think you are dealing with your 6yr old last born?

Reasons why Resident doctors (NARD) hardly achieve anything when they go on strike.
1. They are not a labour group, resident doctors under the aegis of National Association of Resident Doctors are not members of any Labour Union, neither Trade Union Council nor Nigerian Labour Congress, hence they lack the negotiating powers of a trade union and the larger labour unions don't help them in solidarity during impasse or industrial actions.
2. They are under tutelage and not really major employees of federal government unlike consultants, NARD consists of doctors that are undergoing a learning process called residency towards becoming consultants in various medical fields (though they are the ones that do most medical jobs in Nigerian hospitals), this was what the labour minister Dr. Chris Ngige used against them the last time they went on strike, he simply told CMDs that the students have abandoned their schooling and they should find other students to take up the learning process. Fashola also did same during one of their numerous strikes in Lagos, he simply called for intake of new residents and they quickly returned to work.
3. For reasons I don't understand, their consultants do not support them.

Ignorance on fleek.
So because residents aren't members of a trade union they should swallow every poo govt throws at them?
You believe residents are students yet they do 95% of the work in tertiary hospitals including the most complex surgeries?
You also believe a newly employed resident fresh from med school can adequately suffice for for a resident that has stayed up to 4yrs on the system?

BTW,are you a johesu member?
I only stated verifiable facts without prejudice, doctors in Nigeria are one of the lowest paid in the whole world, I'm only saying why they have not been achieving their aims with incessant strikes and if you read what I wrote very well, you will see no antagonism.
BTW, are you one of those suffering from superiority complex?

Good. The doctors should make sure that all their demands are met b4 resuming. There's money in this country but few people are hoarding it.

The FG should get their acts together.
The citizen's lives are at stake here.
Every life matters.
And our Doctors should not turn a blind eye totally to the sick people.
God bless Nigeria.

After destroying the economy with insecurity and bad monetary policies, u turn around to reduce the salary of young doctors to N20k a month and expect them to go back to work because their duty is to save life . yet some hard-hearted ignoramuses are supporting it.
What a cheek !

Hope you know it's easy to say don't turn a blind eye to sick people.
Aren't the doctors sick themselves. Sick of promise and fail of the government. Sick of the whole healthcare system of the country. Sick of being broke and unable to cater for basic needs despite the important position they occupy and time they've given to the society. Depression, frustration, second guessing, agony and helplessness and hopelessness they face daily. How can these set of people still muster the courage to still do their duties in spite of everything.
