Electronics giant Samsung has "blocked" TVs that were stolen in South Africa during the unrest in July, rendering them unusable.

The company says it has an inbuilt “block function” on its TVs that can be used to remotely disable the sets.

The function is activated when a user of a stolen TV or one that has been acquired unlawfully connects to the internet, according to Samsung.

The system checks the identified TV’s serial number against the list on its servers before disabling its functionality.

South Africa had weeks of violent protests and looting last month that left more than 300 people dead and property worth billions of rands ransacked.

Some of the reportedly popular items that were stolen were smart TVs.

The ability to remotely disable TV function has received some praise among online users for its potential use to deter crime, with some also noting its potential for abuse.

One person noted that Samsung was taking "electronic revenge" on looters of its TV sets while another said it was more reason "never to connect a TV set to the internet".

Stop saying what you don't know, I have been traveling to South Africa since 2008, and I have been hearing about the grant, it has nothing to do with covid.

By the way, if you don't know south africa, stop arguing, dstv is in about 20 countries in Africa, and South Africa accounts for almost 50% of all subscribers in Africa.

Poverty in South Africa is around 40%, I believe in Nigeria, it will probably be 80%. Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world.

There is massive poverty in South Africa especially in the shanty towns.

my friend by the name bathong zuma, lives close to kuvuki land, tells me internet is very expensive in sata afrika.
Infact, as I recall when MTN removed the free twitter option it used to give to south Africans , there was a large decrease in the amount of active users flof twitter from sataflika but somehow you are here trying convince us that sataflikans have no problem with streaming content uninterrupted from the internet months and months long.

Smart tvs are all over the place in south africa, and they are connected to the internet. Even in the villages, they connect their tvs to the internet. Dstv isn't a big deal in S.A.

Moreover, its cheaper for people to use Internet tv, than dstv in S.A.

An optic fibre Internet often cost R450/month, unlimited Internet access. Dstv cost about R450 for non premium plan. Since they have Internet, why pay for dstv then?

Nobody wants to buy a function less smart tv in South Africa.
