You think restriction can work. The inability of herders to understand and accept that farmers have a right over their farms brought this problem upon the country. They are uneducated, have a fixation on this archaic cultural practice while exuding a nauseating aura dominance. The ban of open grazing is the first step in the right direction of giving farmers a semblance of protection from the menace of herders. You talk of cost of meat, while forgetting that cost of foodstuff is already high because of this problem. Besides, protein is not found only in meat. Other sources of protein abounds in fish and crops.

What won't work?

It certainly will, if community and traditional institutions wake up to their responsibilities. I will say and defend it anywhere, insecurity will continue to remain a major concern until communities and traditional institutions are strengthened.

One does not need formal education to understand that he isn't supposed to destroy properties owned by others.

Frameworks could be created at the very lowest levels to handle cases involving farmers and herders.

Spare me the talk about other protein sources, who doesn't know that. I never implied that there weren't other protein sources.

Have you asked yourself why over 85% of agricultural produce consumed in the country come from the North, despite the prevalence of open herding activities there?

Why are more of the agricultural produce not coming from the South, since it has less of the open grazing activities?

As far as I am concerned, this new law only demonstrates weakness and incapacity on the part of governors of the South, in exploring a more robust and encompassing solution to handling the issue. It shouldn't be some sort the South against the North kind of approach.

This comes off more like what I learned recently about Gov. Okowa outlawing the use of side curtains by tricycle riders in Asaba for security reasons....what do you call that? He could as well have asked that doors be yanked off all vehicles too...isn't that a clear display of leadership incapacity?

I maintain that I still prefer his position on the issue.

Keep your eyes on the ball - This is what the cabals - Our oppressors are using against us - Divide and conquer - We in diaspora are busy rallying together as indigenous oppressed Nigerians - Injustice to one is injustice to all - My nieces, and nephews are Yoruba's -there is more ,that unites us than seperates us .One love - We have to stay focus, and fight those saboteur leaders - Let us talk to them in the language, that they will understand. Just like end sars - There was no tribalism, thats how we win this battle, against this Fulanization and enslavement agenda's of all indigenous Nigerians, by non Indegenes from futadjalon.

Trust Igbos at your own peril.. I said it here the very moment Southern governors reached the consensus to ban open grazing that no state in SE will pass anti-grazing bill.

It's Uzodinma and Umahi that have balls to reveal their true intentions, Ikpeazu, Ugwuanyi and Obiano won't make any move against their fulani allies. They have always been in alliance with Fulani since the colonial era until 2015 when Buhari contested against Goodluck Jonathan and won. They rooted for Atiku (a Fulani) in 2019 and will queue behind another Fulani in 2023.

I hope Sunday Igboho and his supporters have learnt a thing or two.. once you know your history well, you won't fall into wrong hands or wrong alliance.

Yorubas still remain the check and balance of this country.. It's glaring now why South South folks don't trust or like their South East neighbours cos of their treachery and backstabbing nature. Las las everyone will answer their father's name.

You post rubish Just to get likes, and more than ten pages later and you haven't received even one, take another look at yourself and what you wrote, you effectively belong to the gutter, you are a disappointment. SHAME

Do you think the problem of farmers and herders is restricted to the South. Many central northern states are having same problem with herders. Have you been listening to the rhetorics from Miyetti Allah on clashes between their members and farmers. That age long practice of grazing is no longer tenable in the face prevailing climate change. The action of moving cattle around farm lands was prevalent in the past because of the seeming respect between herders and local farmers. It is clear that this understanding is broken. Before southern governors took this stand, what did the umbrella body for herders do in the face of farmers outcries. Rather, they were either silent or confrontational. At best, they denied outrightly the activities of their members. The governors were almost too slow in taking any action. They can graze around anywhere up north if allowed or condoned. Have you asked yourself why the cost of most foodstuff from the north has skyrocketed. Inspite of that, Southerners do not have a problem with that as long as farmers in the south can enjoy an enabling environment to dare go to farms. I have seen first hand, the impact of defiant grazing on farmlands inspite of the community leaders effort to call the herders to order. The leader of the herders categorically refused to pay compensation or move out of the community.
There is no reasoning with them. The action of 16 governors of the south is well informed, and that is irrespective of their individual policy misjudgements or otherwise.

I hate the way we play politics in the south. Hope is a governor not a legislators. People must put serious pressure on legislators to do the needful. They can even veto him if he refused to sign. This is a serious matter.

I disagree.

The action of the 16 governors is entirely irrational.

How much food comes from to South to the rest of the country?

That simply tells you that this isn't about grazing and cattle herding.

Cost of food from the North is high majorly due to insurgency, covid and flooding of vast farmlands in the North.

How many cattle and farmlamds are even in the South that are said to be destroyed?
