tommy589: I remember that time very well because my grandmother lived at Surulere and when we went to visit her on Saturdays, she'd rush us once it got to 5:30 because she wanted us to leave Surulere before the fans left the stadium. 1 Like |

Paxxcarl:Going abroad is the new mentality, some of them are in school and have other future goals apart from football . Many didn't play it for money just for fame and recognitions. 1 Like |

One of the best right winger/striker to come out of Africa. His generation suffered for the gains being enjoyed by the present crop of players. |

Antoeni: In their time there was no football age because there were no age grade competitions and travelling to Europe to play football was not not in vogue. So there really wasn't any reason for any player to adjust his age. Your statement is crass disrespect to a legend. |

Paxxcarl: 1. Until the 1980s, many European players were not earning megasalaries. The era of megasalaries did not really take off until the 1990s with the coming of lucrative cable deals and Bosman. 2.Nigerian players of Odegbami calibre were relatively paid well 3. European league's were more restrictive or were restricted by the rules then from taking in too many foreign players, even from European countries ( Until the 1980s Italian clubs could only bring one or two foreign players). 4. European clubs also preferred to recruit close to home. 5. Back in Odegbamis time most leagues were not very well known outside their home countries. Live football in England did not really take off till the 1980s, and even then it was some selected matches they showed. Live football was not even a thing during Odegbamis time,in England, in Europe, talkless of Africa. (In Nigeria in the 1980's, local football got a weekly highlights programme...Match of the week, lasting 30 minutes. FA cup games and national team games as well as african/continental championships were the only live tv broadcasts of football) Today we can watch live games from Europe at home. Back then, all guys had were highlights and the odd live match. Cup games especially finals were.televosed live. The only time one got to see live international football was when the world cup was being aired.( in the good old days if you were a national ha coach you had to have a video library of as many players of your opposing national teams as possible which meant having as many connections as possible. Now you just YouTube or watch matches every Saturiday) No live football, no football tv deals, no money 6. European league's were rich but not as rich as they are now. Odegbamis could earn as much money staying at home than he did playing abroad then. ( It was when the naira started falling in the 1980s plus the European league's started getting richer due to tv deals in the 80s and 90s that playing abroad became viable 7. Until the 1985 U17 victory of our youth squad, no one had any idea of how good African players were. ( There were a few Africans playing abroad, but most of then were born abroad. Very few like the legend Mila of Cameroon were recruited from here). The floodgates opened once we had that victory 8. European clubs weren't that rich or prosperous either. They did not start making money until the 1980s with the Italian league leading the way. 1 Like |
