Onitsha A Model For Nigerian Cities by Abohboy: 11:17am On Aug 27, 2021 |
Onitsha is known for having high rises as far as the eye can see and this solution that they came up with is the solution to Nigeria's housing problem. 10 families can fit into a highrise building built on a plot large enough for just a singular bungalow. The ingenuity of the Igbo to build Onitsha in such a manner due to lack of land is impressive and should be emulated in other parts of Nigeia especially in Lagos, Kano and Port Harcourt where housing is a massive problem. Apart from it saving space and accomodating more people it also makes it easier to include more greenery in cities with less people needing more land to live in the more land can be used towards ecology and even more land for roads and more walkways for people. Onitsha should be replicated tenfold across Nigeria by the government we could soon have the most highrises in the whole of Africa if we follow the planning done in Onitsha 6 Likes |

UCyril: Wider streets allows for space to park cars added to that car parks could be built into the buildings without a problem, Nigeria needs to build lots of houses but save land the solution is highrises as Onitsha has done. |

dat9jaguy: It's still a starting example for what Nigerian cities could become low rise or high rise whichever one should be copied and repeated outside Onitsha 1 Like |

Abohboy:in developed countries people don't park cars in the street. High rise building is ok but with adequate planning to give room for other amenities. Do you know in Onitsha even some hotels don't have parking space and i wonder who approved sure building in the first place. 1 Like |

UCyril: Yes they do park on streets in developed countries go to England any time of year in the residential areas even in business districts there are cars parked everywhere on the streets the streets are wide enough to allow two cars to drive on either side and more cars to park on that same street as well. Onitsha is very small and wer strained for space especially when it came to parking so of course there isn't much space for such but that doesn't mean that other cities cannot improve on where Onitsha failed. 3 Likes |

theInterpreter: Nigeria's population is expected to grow to 400 million by 2050 on top of that we shouldn't be enroaching into our forest land that will have a massive impact on ecology and diversity in our ecosystem and would also result in increased CO2 emissions which is not something Nigeria wants to be involved in, so at some point ALL cities will have to start building highrises at least in the centre to accomodate for all the people. |

The only well-planned city in Nigeria is Abuja. Others are glorified villages with pooooooor town planning, where you'll see some few very beautiful buildings and offices mixing with slum/mud houses, even in their capital cities. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

theInterpreter: You are cutting down forests and destroying mangroves and savannah land and most of all you're cutting down trees there may be land but a lot of it should be protected 1 Like |

RenaissanceGuy: They may have poor town planning but they are still good looking cities and not fully mixed in with mud houses as you say and in any case what's wrong with a house made of mud |

Abohboy:nah I don't believe that trash Densely populated cities increase pollution Besides We don't need to cut down anything |

What is the situation?? |
Re: Onitsha A Model For Nigerian Cities by Abohboy: 1:41pm On Aug 27, 2021 |
theInterpreter: Having many trees in large cities greatly reduces pollution so cutting down trees to build more houses increases CO2 as well the way things are going all of the mangroves in Lagos will be gone in the next 20 years |
