Retired commodore Kunle Olawunmi’s revelation on Channels television earlier this week in the wake of mass killings in Jos carried out by Fulanis is not new, and neither is it surprising. Olawunmi, a former military intelligence officer with the Defence Intelligence Agency had said that the plot to Islamize Nigeria has the imprimatur and backing of top government officials serving and retired, a conspiracy that goes deeper than what is seen at the surface.

For the past three years, it has become a near frequent occurrence for former government officials to make such claims on national television. Retd Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, a former chief of defence staff and minister of defence claimed in a speech in 2018 that the military collude with the Fulanis and other allied groups to spread terror and forcefully displace people from their lands. In 2020, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of, Obadiah Mailafia made a similar claim on Nigeria Info, stating that a sitting governor is a funder, as well as a commander of Boko Haram. As a matter of fact, during the Jonathan administration, then president Goodluck Jonathan made a shocking claim that Boko Haram had infiltrated his government.
