Drake’s reps did not immediately respond to HYPEBEAST’s request for comment on Friday morning.
While plenty of fans expressed excitement about the new album's imminent arrival, many are repulsed by the cover, which has been described as "ugly," "abysmal," and "offensively bad" on Twitter.
But as we gear up for the Friday (Sept. 3) arrival of Certified Lover Boy, Drake's long-delayed official LP follow-up to Scorpion -- after 2019's loosies compilation Care Package and 2020's mixtape-designated Dark Lane Demo Tapes -- it's worth asking whether Drake's status is still as bulletproof at this point in a new decade. His star power remains unquestionable, but both statistically and anecdotally, dents in the armor have started to show, and challengers new and old to the throne have continued to pop up around him. Let's look at the factors both supporting and working against his continued supremacy:
After cryptically teasing it last week on ESPN's SportsCenter, Drake confirmed on Monday morning (August 30) that his long-awaited new album, Certified Lover Boy, is just over the horizon. The rapper posted an image of 12 expectant mom emojis on Instagram along with the all-caps message "CERTIFIED LOVER BOY SEPTEMBER 3."
Kanye West has taken his cold war with Drake to new heights — literally.
Drake’s highly anticipated next album “Certified Lover Boy” is nearly here…if a cryptic video on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” is to be believed.
According to TIDAL’s Elliott Wilson, the pregnant women emoji picture is the official CLB album cover. The artwork appears to have been designed by British artist Damien Hirst, who Drake tagged in his Instagram announcement post.

After months of rumors and delays, one official false alarm, a strange ESPN teaser, and release-date battle with Kanye West’s “Donda” that never happened, Drake has confirmed in unambiguous terms that his long-awaited sixth full-length album “Certified Lover Boy” will finally be out on Friday.

Instead, Drake released his Scary Hours 2 EP, featuring three tracks. He later featured on Nicki Minaj’s “Seeing Green,” Brent Faiyaz’s “Wasting Time,” Smiley’s “Over the Top,” and Trippie Redd’s “Betrayal.”

Sandi Graham has been sending him sweet notes each day before 6 God drops his sixth studio album on Friday (Sept. 3). On Tuesday, the rapper shared a rhyme from her that was addressed to "Lover Boy."
Now, the Grammy Award-winning artist has finally confirmed the record’s launch date. Taking to Instagram, Drake posted the album’s official artwork designed by British contemporary artist Damien Hirst. The cover features 12 “Pregnant Woman” emojis in different skin tones.
Hotline Bling appears on Drake's fourth studio album Views, released in April 2016. The album also includes the singles "One Dance," "Pop Style," "Controlla" and "Too Good."
In July, Drake announced during his appearance on Fri Yiy Friday -- a Sirius XM radio show spearheaded by his OVO Team -- that he finished Certified Lover Boy during his appearance. "Album's ready … Album's cooked, looking forward to delivering it to you. Certified Lover Boy on the way, and that's for anyone in the way."
He's gonna make you work for it, though. As documented by journalist (and Tidal chief content officer) Elliott Wilson, the sometimes cryptic ads hint at the features, which real fans were quick to decode. For instance, "Hey, New York, the GOAT is on CLB," was widely interpreted to suggest that Jay-Z will make a cameo -- an interesting prospect since Jigga also features on Drake'a again-rival Kanye West's just-released Donda album. Among the other guesses about who the GOAT in questions might be were Nas or Drake's Young Money label mate Nicki Minaj.
In July, Drake announced during his appearance on Fri Yiy Friday -- a Sirius XM radio show spearheaded by his OVO Team -- that he'd finished work on his follow-up to 2018's Scorpion. "Album's ready … Album's cooked, looking forward to delivering it to you. Certified Lover Boy on the way, and that's for anyone in the way," he said at the time.
The album was slated for release in January but was delayed since the Canadian singer underwent a knee surgery and needed time to properly recover.
Last month, the Hip Hop heavyweights reignited their long-brewing rivalry after Drake took a jab at Kanye on Trippie Redd’s “Betrayal,” to which Ye responded by channeling his inner Joker and exposing Drake’s home address on social media — a move that got a Joker-esque chuckle out of the OVO rapper.
On Monday, Drizzy confirmed that CLB will drop this week by posting the cover image: a colorful collage of pregnant mom emoji that became an instant talking point, even inspiring Lil Nas X to do a bit of his patented light trolling by offering up his own take on the oddball image. In Lil Nas' hands, the moms became 12 bearded, masculine-presenting emoji, all holding their pregnant bellies.
Tell me the (art) world values mediocre White cis-male artists above all else Without telling me the (art) world values mediocre White cis-male artists above all else, wrote the critic on Instagram, attaching a photo of Drake's cover art. The feminist take was seemingly co-signed and "liked" by none other than Pusha-T, Drake's arch-nemesis, who appeared to agree with the message. "Thanks @champagnepapi for reaffirming the utter mediocrity that rises to the top of the art world," added the critic.
Drake's Certified Lover Boy is coming hot and heavy, and it might arrive with an appearance from JAY-Z.
“Hey New York, the GOAT is on CLB,” reads a billboard in New York, implying that JAY-Z will appear on the album. Take a peek at the images below.
Drake's bombshell announcement comes on the heels of Kanye West finally delivering his 10th studio album, Donda.
The Houston billboard that popped up Wednesday night - at least on social media, because no one seems to have an exact location for it - has led to an even bigger debate.
The Canadian rap star posted an image of 12 expectant mom emojis on Instagram along with the all-caps message “Certified Lover Boy September 3.”
Sure the shirts are fire, but where can fans cop them?
Later in the evening, OVO Mark drove around the streets of Toronto to gift fans with the merch. Mark even hopped on Live with Drake as he was passing out the t-shirts.
The two rappers have been at odds for years, and their feud has extended to include Kanye West in recent times. After Drake unveiled the cover artwork for his new album, which shows multiple emojis of pregnant women, a critic went off about how the design could be indicative of a larger issue in the art world.
On “Betrayal,” Drake rapped “All these fools I’m beefin’ that I barely know/Forty-five, 44 (Burned out), let it go/Ye ain’t changin’ shit for me, it’s set in stone,” as quoted by Genius. His lyrics appeared to reignite a simmering beef with Kanye West. Notably, the ever-changing iTunes pre-order page for West’s new album Donda lists a September 5 release date.
When an artist has as much universal appeal as Drake, an interesting conundrum arises; how can the entirety of his fanbase be pleased? An effort to appease such a wide-ranging audience is a risky endeavor, as such albums tend to lack cohesion and consistency across the board. Look no further than Scorpion, his double album from 2018, which was met with mixed responses despite its wide array of different musical styles. Drake previously confirmed that CLB would be significantly shorter than Scorpion, teasing “something more concise.” But should that be the case, attempting to shoehorn in all of his styles runs the risk of derailing musical cohesion.
Drake has announced that his long-awaited sixth album, "Certified Lover Boy," will be released on Friday — but the reveal was met with mixed reactions.
Perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, Drake confirmed that he had a son (after Pusha T leaked the news) through lyrics on his fifth and most-recent studio album, Scorpion.

While Drake, 34, and Kanye, 44, won't really go head-to-head, the two superstars appeared to be setting up an epic chart clash withs some salty verses, with Drake firing first on Trippie Redd's new song, "Betrayal." On Wednesday (Sept. 1), he shared her second note, which was written on the back of a postcard from Wolf & Moon, a Toronto-based boutique: "Day two is here, one more to go. We go high when they go low. Certified -- it's been quite a ride, I forever admire your relentless drive."

In fact, for over eight years, Drake wasn't absent from the charts at all: From the week his breakthrough smash "Best I Ever Had" introduced him to the Hot 100 for the first time on the chart dated May 23, 2009, up until his "Passionfruit" and "Signs" dropped off the chart dated Aug. 26, 2017, there was not a single Hot 100 listing in which he didn't appear on at least one entry -- an unprecedented 431-week run. And over the course of that historic run, myriad records fell: In 2020 alone, he set Hot 100 marks for both most total entries and most top 10 hits on the chart, supplanting the Glee Cast and Madonna, respectively. Other stars had reached similar pop heights over the prior decade -- Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Rihanna -- but it was unquestionable that no hitmaker was as productive, consistent or generally indefatigable as Drake.

Kanye then publicly leaked the Canadian rapper's address and, as if the crap of the famous wasn't enough, Drake fans took the artist's pain and vandalized Kanye's childhood home in Chicago, recreated inside Soldier Field Stadium for the last DONDA audition days ago.
The post includes what may be the album’s cover: little cartoons of pregnant women (take it away, Internet!)…
Leading up to the release, the chart-topper has compared the sixth studio effort to his 2016 album, Views, admitting that "it's music to evolve to."
Drake has revealed the release date for his long-awaited new album, Certified Lover Boy, on ESPN’s flagship program SportsCenter Friday, August 27th.
In June 2021, Drake took to Instagram to share a photo of him, Future, and famed producer Metro Boomin in the studio. So, fans took that to mean that Future will likely be featured on “CLB.”
“Album’s cooked,” he said during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Sound 42’s Fri Yiy Friday radio show. “Looking forward to delivering it to you … OVO, we aim for that head. We don’t aim to please. Certified Lover Boy on the way. And that’s for anyone in the way.”
The Canadian rapper first announced that he was recording a new album in August 2020, and finally, it’s ready for release.
Last week, Drake seemed to hint that CLB was imminent on ESPN’s flagship programme ‘SportsCenter’, sneaking in an image of a fan holding up a sign reading “CLB September 3” in between baseball highlights.
Each of the messages refers to a featured guest from the city where the billboard has popped up. In Georgia, the reveal is none too mysterious. “Hey Atlanta,” it reads. “Slime, Pluto, Savage and Baby are on CLB,” referring to Young Thug, Future, 21 Savage and Lil Baby.
Now that "Certified Lover Boy" is on the tip of everyone’s tongue, fans are wondering which artists will grace the project with a verse or two. After all, Drake is known for creating some of the best collaborations in the hip-hop world. Since the project is set to be released on Sept. 3, 2021, rumors have been spreading about which artists to expect. So, the only question that remains is: Who will be featured on Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” album? Get comfortable as we spill the deets.

In 2019, Drake released Care Package, a compilation of tracks originally released between 2010 and 2016. The project brought fan favorites—such as “Girls Love Beyoncé” and “How About Now”—to streaming services for the first time.
“OVO, we aim for the head, we don’t aim to please. Certified Lover Boy on the way, and that’s for anyone in the way.”
Drake is the highest-certified digital singles artiste ever in the United States, having moved 142 million units based on combined sales and on-demand streams. The pop star has won four Grammy awards along with several others accolades.
This morning, ESPN's SportsCenter was interrupted with a cryptic clip of a faceless figure holding up a cardboard sign reading "CLB September 3." Though the Lover Boy himself has neither confirmed nor denied the drop date, a representative told Rolling Stone that the mysterious teaser can be taken "at face value."
Though Certified Lover Boy is the full-length successor to 2018’s Scorpion, Drake has released some new material in between, including last year’s Dark Lane Demo Tapes. The project—Drake’s first in a decade not to make a No. 1 Billboard debut—included his attempted dance challenge “Toosie Slide.”
While a spokesperson for Drake had no comment on the campaign at press time, the outdoor media company behind it, MilkMoney, told Billboard that the ads are appearing in the markets where each artists is from. So, for instance, while the Houston one reads, "Hey Houston, the hometown hero is on CLB," leading to rampant speculation about which MC is in the mix, Atlanta's clearly notes "Hey ATL, 21 Savage is on CLB."
Certified Lover Boy was first announced in August 2020 along with the release of the video for "Laugh Now, Cry Later" featuring Lil Durk. It was initially planned for release in January 2021, but was delayed after Drake suffered a leg injury. Instead, Drake shared the three-track EP Scary Hours II.
This comes as Drake and Kanye West rebooted their yearslong tension. West seemed to call out Drake in "Pure Souls" in the lead-up to the release of Donda, and Drake returned the favor in his verse on Trippie Redd's "Betrayal." West would go on to leak Drake's home address. With Donda and Certified Lover Boy out in the same week, it's likely the public will judge the two albums against each other.
Dark Lane Demo Tapes was the first Drake project in 10 years that didn’t debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, ending the streak that began with the release of Thank Me Later in 2010. He made an appearance on Lil Wayne’s Apple Music radio program Young Money Radio shortly after the release of the mixtape to talk about the project, how the COVID-19 pandemic made him reconsider how he wanted to release music, and more.
“@ovomark and @drwferguson giving out tees tonight in the 6 link up with the man demmm,” Drake wrote.
