A friend of mine who used to school in the North revealed that a lecturer had to teach English in Hausa, simply because the northern students cldn't understand the course...then when the non-northern students who couldn't understand Hausa complained, the lecturer told them that that was not his business and that they should meet their colleagues who understand Hausa.
